Athlete Mary Moraa has hailed Hellen Obiri for venturing into the marathon and winning a bronze medal for Kenya.
Moraa celebrated Obiri for being her mentor and braving the gruelling Paris marathon track to finish third.
“As the 33rd Olympic Games closing ceremony goes down, allow me to celebrate this great woman, one of my mentors, Hellen Obiri. She fought a brave battle to win bronze in the women’s marathon. Congratulations lady. Sifan Hassan 2:22:55 OR ,Tigist Assefa 2:22:58, Hellen Obiri 2:23:10.” Moraa said.
Obiri won bronze in the Paris Olympics Women’s Marathon, 12 seconds behind Ethiopian Tigst Assefa, who claimed silver as Dutch star Sifan Hassan took gold in a dramatic sprint finish.
“I don’t see myself competing for Kenya in the next Olympics, it is too far. For now, I have to focus on the majors. I will make a good recovery because, in a marathon, you need four months to recover. We will discuss with the coaches and manager to see what’s best for me this season,” Obiri said.
Mary Moraa, born on June 15, 2000, is a Kenyan middle-distance athlete who has made a significant impact in the world of track and field, particularly in the 800 metres event.
Growing up in Kisii, a region in western Kenya, Moraa’s early life was marked by tragedy.
Orphaned at just two years old due to the loss of both her parents, she was raised by her grandparents.
Despite the challenges she faced, Moraa discovered her passion for running, a talent that would not only shape her future but also provide her with an opportunity for education through an earned bursary.
