TUKO.co.ke recently launched the second edition of the TUKO Business Leaders Awards 2024, which highlights Kenya’s brightest and most inspiring figures.

The focus was on showcasing stories of perseverance and dedication, all while fostering a culture of giving back to transform Kenya’s socio-economic landscape.

TUKO.co.ke noted that the year’s honorees come from industries directly impacting Kenyans, including banking and transportation.

In this article, WoK looks at the winners of the awards, including Family Bank CEO Nancy Njau and Expeditions Maasai CEO Pancras Karema.

1. Solomon Angutsa – CEO Kenya National Police DT Sacco

Angutsa is the Chief Executive Officer of Kenya National Police DT Sacco Society Ltd, a position he has held since September 2011.

He has extensive experience in the civic and social organization sector, specializing in customer service, management, and business strategy.

Angutsa previously served as Deputy General Manager at Kenya Police SACCO Ltd from 2008 to 2011.

He is a graduate of the University of Nairobi, where he studied Operations Management.

2. Nyandia Kamawe – Founder of Moko Maya

Kamawe is the founder of MokoMaya, a company dedicated to inspiring women and youth to become skilled craftsmen.

Her mission focuses on creating high-quality goods that promote sustainability and creativity.

Kamawe emphasizes visual art in her projects, ensuring a personal touch in each décor creation.

3. Nancy Njau – CEO of Family Bank

Njau is the Chief Executive Officer of Family Bank, appointed on January 1, 2024.

She has a strong educational background, holding a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and an MBA.

Njau began her career at Family Bank in 2002 and has held various roles, including Branch Manager and Head of Retail Banking.

As CEO, she aims to establish a non-operating holding company for expansion into East, Central, and West Africa.

4. Nelson Mwangi – CEO of Super Metro

Mwangi is the CEO and co-founder of Super Metro, a matatu company established in 2013.

His journey began from humble beginnings, selling roasted maize and working as a lift attendant before entering the matatu industry.

Under his leadership, Super Metro has grown to operate over 520 buses, emphasizing professionalism and customer service.

Mwangi’s vision was to transform the chaotic matatu sector into a reputable industry, which he achieved through rigorous recruitment and operational standards, ultimately making Super Metro a trusted brand in public transport in Kenya.

5. Vimal Shah – CEO of Bidco

Shah is the CEO and co-founder of Bidco Africa, a leading manufacturer in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector.

Under his leadership since 1985, Bidco has transformed from a small soap plant into a regional powerhouse with over 67 brands across 18 African countries.

The company has received over 40 awards for excellence in various domains, including energy management and business leadership.

Shah is also recognized for his mentorship efforts and has held significant roles in industry associations, contributing to economic sustainability in Kenya.

He was awarded the Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear in 2011 for his contributions to entrepreneurship.

6. Pancras Karema – CEO of Expeditions Maasai

Karema is the CEO and co-founder of Expeditions Maasai Safaris, a prominent tour company operating from Nairobi.

Born in the early 1990s, he developed a passion for Kenya’s natural beauty during his childhood.

Karema holds a Bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management from the University of Nairobi and has received accolades such as Kenya’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year Under 30 in 2019.

Under his leadership, Expeditions Maasai has gained recognition, including nominations for Kenya’s Leading Travel Agency since 2019 and various SME awards.
