As Kenyans are still coming to terms with the horrific discovery of mutilated bodies at Nairobi’s Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums, many have come out in droves to commend Charles Wambua who volunteered to retrieve the remains from the Kware pit.
Wambua who has attracted the attention of notable figures such as media personality Eric Omondi and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has been hailed as a hero for braving the murky waters filled with all kinds of waste and trash to retrieve the bodies stashed in gunny bags.
A local tours company has even offered him a three-day holiday to Mombasa as a way of thanking him for his courage.
“Deserves a free holiday from us, 3 days to Mombasa,” the CEO of the tour company shared.
This elicited mixed reactions from netizens with many arguing that more was needed to help the volunteer owing to the large capacity he had helped in locating and retrieving the bodies.
In a previous interview with a local media outlet, the 28-year-old volunteer who is a trained plant operator had shared his struggles with securing a job despite lending his services to police officers on many other occasions where they needed bodies retrieved.
“I do not have a permanent job, so I make ends meet through hustles in the quarry,” he said.
Many Kenyans argued that a permanent job was the first priority to assist him to get back on his feet.
” Vacation haisaidii anything. If the man has no hustle should atleast get him some job to begin earning something and his hardworking would bear a testimony than going to Mombasa, eat and enjoy then back to default settings after three days,” a social media user named Martin KM opined.
“Not just a vacation , he is supposed to be given a permanent job,” another shared.
“Ampee kazi awache mambo na vacation ama hiyo pesa wangespend for that vacation wamfungulie biashara,” a user named Tyler Alexander stated.
Others supported the idea of a vacation, noting that he had just gone through a traumatic experience handling the bodies and should be compensated with a lavish travel experience.
“Fantastic.Much Congratulations for recognizing that Ambitious Young Guy,” Duncan Mutinda commented.
“Thats wow, may God bless him,” another stated.
“His star is shining from unfortunate circumstances but all in all, he did the best,” John Njoroge stated.
On Monday, July 15, Eric Omondi met with Wambua and sought support through the Team Sisi Kwa Sisi initiative, asking Kenyans to send donations via his personal mobile line.
