Number Of Teachers Who Have Applied For Internship Positions, Qualifications, Pay And Timelines

The number of teachers who have applied for the internship teaching positions advertised in local dailies is a sad remainder of the high rates of unemployment in Kenya. According to a statement released by the Teacher Service Commission (TSC), a total of 102,918 teachers applied for the 10,300 advertised positions. The number could have been higher if it was not for the TSC portal-www.tsc.go.ke-that went down but has since been restored.

Number to be employed by TSC
Out of the 10,300 trained teachers who will be absorbed by TSC, 6,000 will be deployed in secondary schools while 4,300 will cater for primary schools.

Requirements
Primary school
To qualify, candidates must be registered with TSC, must be below 35 years, be in possession of a P1 certificate and be jobless.

Secondary school
Atleast a Diploma in Education and above. The other requirements are the same as primary school interns.
So far, a total of 97,736 teachers have applied for teaching positions in secondary schools. Primary schools have seen 5,182 apply for the positions.

Salary
The interns will be paid kes10,000 and kes15,000 for primary and secondary school respectively. This amount will be subjected to statutory deductions.

Eligibility for Internship via TSC

Eligible candidates should meet the following basic requirements:

Be Kenyan Citizen;
Have original academic and professional certificates;

Be unemployed and has not previously been employed by the Commission on permanent terms;

Must be registered as per the TSC ACT 2012;

Be a holder of a P1 Certificate for Primary Schools and a minimum of a Diploma in Education Certificate for Secondary School applicants;

Be ready to be posted to any public educational institution in Kenya where their services are required;

Must have a Personal Accident Insurance to cover for personal risks during the internship period;

In addition to the above, successful interns shall be required to produce; A valid Certificate of Good Conduct;

National Identity Card (ID) or copy of passport and a copy of KRA PIN

Certificate;
Two (2) coloured passport size photographs;

Teacher Registration Certificate.

Duration of Internship: The Internship period will be twelve (12) months.

Remuneration: This is not a remunerative position. However, interns attached to Secondary Schools are entitled to a monthly stipend of Kshs. 15,000 and Kshs.10,000 for those in Primary Schools (This stipend is subject to statutory deductions where applicable).
