In the center of Kisumu, a fishmonger has dedicated the last ten years to establishing a successful enterprise that provides fish to a global market.

Focusing on tilapia sourced from Lake Victoria, Peninah Opis’ business has become essential for hotels, schools, and hospitals in major urban areas.

In addition to tilapia, she offers other fish varieties such as Nile perch and omena upon request.

Opis begins her day at 5 am, traveling to the lakeshore to personally select fish from local fishermen.

With her extensive experience, she skillfully manages, prepares, and preserves her products for distribution.

“I started this business 10 years ago and have never looked back. It’s my livelihood, and I enjoy what I do,” she stated.

The entrepreneur revealed that her journey commenced when a client moved away yet persisted in placing orders with her.

This pivotal moment led to an influx of additional orders from the client’s network.

Opis’ enterprise now functions through an extensive distribution system, enabling her to serve customers across vast distances.

She acknowledged that establishing and nurturing a prosperous business over the past ten years has not been devoid of obstacles.

“You have to know your competition and keep innovating,” she said.

Opis acknowledges her pride in her accomplishments to date; however, she is convinced that there remains a broader horizon awaiting her.

She attributes her decade of success to her vision, resilience, financial acumen, and unwavering persistence.
