Popular Diploma Courses in Kenya That Do Not Require Mathematics

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) on Thursday, August 1, reopened the placement portal to allow students who failed to secured a course to apply for the Technical Vocational Education and Training(TVET) programmes.

KUCCPS noted that 2,000 form four leavers of the 2023 KCSE examinations had failed to secure a course in the previous applications prompting the reopening of the portal.

According to the placement service, eligible candidates were allowed to apply for placement to Artisan, Craft and Diploma courses in public TVET institutions.

While applying ,students should know that there are some courses thay do not require mathematics qualifications to pursue because their material does not require mathematical concepts or calculations.

Here are some courses you can apply to that do not need Mathematics:

1. Culinary Arts
This course is one of the most preferred that does not require a vast knowledge of maths. Students are trained in the basics of food preparation and presentation as well as courses in nutrition, food safety, kitchen management, knife skills, baking and pastry, and international cuisines. You can enrol for a diploma if you have a KCSE mean grade of C- (minus). Interest or experience in food preparation is also beneficial.

2. Mass Communication
This is another popular choice for students that does not  require formal mathematics qualifications or a background. A diploma in Mass Communication involves training in  editing,  reporting , writing or media management .A student can enrol for a Diploma in Journalism if they have attained a mean grade of C- (minus) at KCSE.  Some institutions may require a C plain in English.

3. Early Childhood Education
This course does not requires a vast knowledge in mathematics as it trains individuals to work with young children, focusing on developmental psychology and education strategies. You can apply right from the certificate level to diploma to study this course with a minimum KCSE grade of C-(minus) as well as a  good grade in English and Kiswahili.

4. Fashion and Design
Fashion and Design is one of the most marketable science courses that don’t require Maths to enrol in Kenyan TVET institutions. Students are trained in garment production , textile managements and fashion trends. You can join any public TVET institution to study this course if you have a minimum KCSE grade of C-(minus) and a good grade in either  Art and Design, Home Science or any one science subject.

5. Graphic Design
Graphics Design is one of the most preferred courses by students who seek computer training without a Maths requirement.A student only needs basic knowledge on computers to learn graphics design right from a certificate to a diploma level. After graduating, the career paths are endless, ranging from freelancing, marketing, and advertising to web design and medical illustrations. The students only needs a minimum grade of C-(minus) and a keen interest in design.

6. Hospitality and Tourism Management
A diploma in hospitality and tourism  management is a comprehensive programme of study that covers business and travel operations, hotel management, and customer service skills required in the hospitality industry. This course does not require Mathematics for Kenyan students but a student must meet the minimum requirements of an overall C- (minus) grade at KCSE to pursue a diploma. A good grade in English and other languages is also  preferred.

7. Social Work and Community Development
This course prepares students for roles in social services, focusing on community engagement and support. The beauty of this course is that one does not need to have a Mathematical background to interact with the community. You only need a minimum KCSE grade of C-(minus) and a good grade in English  and Kiswahili.

8.Interior Design
Interior design is gradually becoming a go-to course for students as the industry is booming. This program involves designing and decorating interiors for homes and businesses, hence does not require Mathematics. As with majority of diploma courses, students require a minimum KCSE grade of C- (minus) and a keen interest in design.

9. Event Management
This program is another that requires a basic knowledge of Mathematics, as it covers planning, organizing, and managing events like weddings, conferences, and concerts. Students can pursue this course to any higher learning institutions with a minimum grade of C-(minus) and have a mastery of good communication skills.

10. Film and Video Production
As with graphic design, a student does not a Maths qualification to learn film and video production right from a certificate to a diploma level. In this program, students learn about filmmaking, video editing, and production techniques. To pursue this course they need a passion for film as well as minimum grade of C-(minus).

KUCCPS courses are divided into degree, diploma, certificate, and artisan programmes and students wishing to apply were advised to log in via the KUCCPS portal students.kuccps.net and submit their choices.

KUCCPS has provided applicants with a three-week window to select their preferred courses. The application process will run alongside inter-institutional transfers. Students are encouraged to act quickly to avoid missing out.
