Over the past one week, presenters from Standard Media-owned radio station, Radio Maisha, have been announcing their departure from the station.
The exodus comes months after Standard Media Group announced mass firing on grounds that it was adapting to the changing media space.
In this article, WoK looks at radio presenters who have called it quits at the radio station and where they are headed.
Ali Kauleni
Radio presenter Ali Hassan Kauleni announced his exit from Radio Maisha on February 18, 2023 after a 13-year stint.
In his last show, he reflected on his stint at the Standard Media Group spanning over a decade in different outlets owned by the media house.
He is set to join Radio47 where he will be the station’s sports editor and a commentator. The presenter will also host Swahili Education shows.
Beatrice Maganga
Radio Maisha news anchor Beatrice Maganga called it quits at the radio station on January 28, 2023 during a live show.
She announced her exit from the station after reading the final bulletin, however, not disclosing her next move.
Maganga is known for her eloquence while casting news and a strong command of Swahili which has earned her fame and warmed listeners.
She is also set to join Radio47.
Emmanuel Mwashumbe
Celebrated radio presenter Emmanuel Mwashumbe hosted the morning show alongside Shuga Boy at Radio Maisha.
He started his radio career at KBC before he was poached to join Radio Maisha.
At the station, he hostef the evening show before he was eventually moved to the drive show and later the morning show.
Mwashumbe joins Radio47.
Billy Miya
Billy Miya is set to leave Radio Maisha after his last show on Friday, March 3.
The award winning presenter started as an intern at Pwani Radio before joining Baraka FM and later Milele FM, before finally joining Radio Maisha.
Before moving to Radio Maisha, Billy presented the morning drive show at Milele FM alongside his co-host Mbaruk Mwalimu and DJ TEN.
He would join the newly launched Radio47.
Mbaruk Mwalimu
Mbaruk Mwalimu also announced his exit from Radio Maisha.
Mwalimu joined Radio Maisha in 2018 alongside Billy Miya from Milele FM.
He is set to join Radio47.
Radio47
Radio47 whose broadcast will be mainly in Kiswahili is set to hit the airwaves soon.
The radio station is owned by Prof Simon Gicharu, the chairman of Mount Kenya University (MKU) and the proprietor of TV47.
He is said to have acquired radio frequencies from a private investor who disposed of them after the elections.
Radio 47 frequencies will cover some of Kenya’s main towns including Nairobi, Webuye, Kisumu, Kericho, Mumias, Mombasa, Lamu and Garsen, among others.
