Rex Masai was allegedly shot by a police officer during the Occupy Parliament protests in Nairobi CBD.

The mother of Rex Masai, the young man allegedly shot dead by a police officer has spoken about what happened to her son.

Speaking with journalists, Gillian Munyao said that her 29-year-old was from work and in the company of a friend.

The mother revealed that her son and his friend were in the CBD to run errands.

Rex was standing near the archives when a tear gas canister was thrown near him.

The duo then started running with police chasing after them.

It was at this moment that a police officer fired at them, the bullet hit Rex on his thighs making him fall.

“The friend says that they were standing near archives and a teargas canister was launched in their direction. However, when they were running he was shot,”

“When the police left, the friend went to check on him. They even called the police to help them when the officer stated that they should leave him to die there,” the mother said.

The distraught mother said she didn’t see her son alive after being informed of the shooting at night.

“I was called around 7 pm and I was informed that he had been shot in the left leg and that he was taken to a clinic near Archives,”

“When I arrived in Town, I was told that he was no more.” She added.

Gillian Munyao now demands justice for her son and a proper investigation.

“I want to ask the government for justice for the person who killed my son,” she said.

The killing of Rex has angered Kenyans with many turning to social media to call for the arrest of the police.

Politicians including MP Babu Owino have also demanded swift justice and support for Rex Masai’s family.
