A pot belly is associated with wealth in Kenya. It’s a rarity to see a struggling Kenyan with an excessively protruding abdomen. What many don’t know is that carrying such fats is a health risk and very uncomfortable when performing certain duties. Abdominal obesity can cause health diseases, diabetes, asthma and a host of other complications. But that is not what this article is about. This piece looks at powerful individuals with pot bellies who have a say on how this country is run.
Francis Atwoli-COTU Secretary General
The Central Organization of Trade Unions of Kenya (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli is an opinionated man known for his open disdain of Deputy President William Ruto. His close connection to President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga has made him one of the most powerful men in the country. He is round, rich and carries his weight like a badge of honor.
Fred Matiang’i-Internal Cabinet Secretary
The no-nonsense CS is known for his work ethic that has endeared him to many Kenyans. He played a pivotal role in ensuring that cheating in national exams was put to an end when he was the Education CS. Murmurs are loud that the rotund CS will run for the presidency in 2022. He is one of the most powerful and some have it arrogant CS in Uhuru Kenyatta’s inner circle.
Cyprian Awiti-Homabay Governor
His fashion sense is so off that he has been labeled as the worst dressed Governor in Kenya. The Governor-who makes our list of round individuals-is super rich.
Musalia Mudavadi-ANC
Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi is a man who was born in wealth. He is a powerful politician who has a number of MPs in parliament. The ANC leader has a sizeable abdomen which makes him look older than he actually is.
Mike Mbuvi Sonko-Nairobi Governor
Sonko has been reduced to a ceremonial Governor after Major-General Mohammed Badi took over most of his duties. The Governor has been gaining weight around his abdomen. He should consider hitting the gym now that he has a lot of time on his hands. Although he is down, the Nairobi Governor is a force to reckon with and this will be seen in 2022 general elections.
