America’s transportation network is primarily characterized by large trucks that traverse all states, delivering a wide array of goods.

However, the profitability of this industry is not widely recognized, with some drivers earning as much as Ksh 700,000 monthly.

Samuel Mulwa embarked on a career in truck driving in the United States in 2020 after being introduced to the trucking sector by a friend who had spent six years in the field.

He mentioned that he initially worked in the medical sector in the US before opting to leave that profession and enroll in a trucking school, motivated by his friend’s insights into the lucrative nature of the transportation industry.

“I joined a trucking school and attended a five-week programme. I paid Ksh447,000 and was trained on the basics of the program,” he stated.

Mulwa stated that after completing a test, he was obligated to collaborate with a trainer for several weeks to assist him in mastering fundamental driving skills and techniques that were not covered in his educational program.

Although the fee was substantial, the truck driver noted that his investment was worthwhile, as he earned an average of Ksh 180,000 weekly during his initial year.

“The pay is dependent on the experience. Definitely is very rewarding. When you drive for five days a week and you get an average of Ksh 178,000 and after tax that will be around Ksh 155,000,” he said.

Mulwa states that his salary had increased after spending two years in the industry.

Nevertheless, he revealed that trucking is not as simple as many assume, highlighting the difficulties associated with operating the large vehicles.

“It was scary because reversing is very difficult. On the highway, you just have to check the side mirrors. Not everyone can drive but it is very rewarding. One of the greatest challenges is the weather. The wind here can be crazy at times,” he stated.

Mulwa advised thise interested in entering the trucking business to prioritize their passion over financial gain, considering the significant challenges associated with the profession.

“You have to love what to do because it is rewarding. Do not focus on money. You can imagine driving for 5000 kilometres,” he stated.
