Former disgraced Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko made serious allegations that high profile individuals in the government were planning to assassinate Deputy President William Ruto. Before he went slow on making such alarming statements, Sonko who had accompanied the DP said of the plans to eliminate the second in command:
“I am not afraid. I have been told that they plan to kill me as well as the Deputy President. The only person who has the authority to take away human life is God……”
“I just want to warn the DP not to partake anything that is offered to him at State House and that is because I love him and would like him to be the fifth President of Kenya…”
But how easy is it to kill a sitting DP? Such an attempt is extremely difficult if not impossible. The DP is the second most protected VVIP in Kenya after the President.
Here is a sneak peak into DP Ruto’s security detail.
His security detail is drawn from the highly trained paramilitary GSU Guard ‘G’ Company. These experienced officers are specialists in handling and detonating explosives, security of vital installations, anti-terrorism, sky marshal services (the counter-terrorism unit onboard commercial flights) and rescue operations.
According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, the DP has a total of 257 security personnel at his disposal. Out of this number, 74 are presidential escort officers.
His homes and property have not less than 4 GSU officers each who work in shifts to ensure no intruders gain access to the compound.
Here is a peek of the number of officers providing security at the DPs property.
Roads are cleared to make way for the DP and police are deployed whenever he attends his many church fundraisers or when campaigning.
The DP selects officers he is sure are loyal to him. Most of those guiding his homes and providing his security are from his region Next
