In Kenya, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has introduced a new system for customized number plates, offering a unique and personalized way for car owners to showcase their vehicles.
With the increasing demand for these plates, the government has set specific fees and guidelines for their issuance.
In this article, WoK gives a step-by-step guide on how to get a customized number plate in Kenya and the associated charges.
NTSA encourages motorists to consider purchasing personalised number plates that display the owner’s desired name.
There is no practical or visual distinction between plates that are just numbers that have been accumulating over time as they are issued and those that display the names of the car owners.
Names of political groups, disparaging names, and names that incite ethnic or racial conflicts are prohibited.
The NTSA clarified that the number plate is not transferable to another party.
However, anyone requesting personalized number plates will have to pay Ksh 1,000,000 and wait five working days.
All said and done, the application process is as follows;
- Go to the official NTSA website.
- Select the preference service portal.
- Log in to access the TIMS account.
- Upload all the relevant documents (request letter and original logbook).
- Submit the application for NTSA verification and approval.
- After successful approval, log into your TIMS account and make payments.
- Once the application is complete, click ‘Submit’.
