Some of Kenya’s leading supermarkets have evolved significantly from their humble beginnings as small kiosks, reflecting the dynamic nature of the retail landscape.

Initially serving local communities with basic goods, these kiosks have transformed into expansive supermarket chains, catering to a growing urban population.

Notably, this transition highlights the changing consumer preferences and the increasing demand for convenience and variety in shopping.

In this article, WoK looks at some of Kenya’s leading supermarkets that grew to become fully-fledged retail stores.

1. Chandarana

Chandarana Foodplus is a Kenyan-owned supermarket chain established in 1959, offering a wide range of products.

The products include fresh produce, dairy, meats, household items and more.

The prominent supermarket chain was established in 1959 by Shantilal Mulji Thakkar and his brother in Nairobi’s Highridge area.

Initially a small grocery store, it has expanded significantly, now operating over 27 branches across major Kenyan cities.

The chain is known for its focus on quality, competitive pricing, and personalized customer service, which has been a hallmark of its operations.

Today, it is managed by the next generation of the Thakkar family, continuing its legacy in the retail sector.

2. Magunas

Simon Wachira founded Magunas Supermarket after starting as a hawker in the 1980s in Mukuyu market.

His initial retail shop opened in 1990, leading to the establishment of Maguna Andu Wholesalers, which evolved into the supermarket chain.

Magunas has since expanded to multiple counties, competing with major retailers like Naivas and Quickmart.

3. Khetias

Khetia’s Supermarket began in 1982 as a small wholesale shop in Kitale, Kenya, founded by Ashok Khetia and initially operated with two employees using a pickup truck for sales.

The business expanded rapidly, opening its first supermarket in Bungoma in 1994 and later establishing the Gigamart in Kitale, which became one of Kenya’s largest supermarkets.

Today, Khetia’s has over 20 branches across the country, thriving despite challenges faced by other retailers.

4. PeshMatt Supermarket

Founded in 2013 by the enterprising politician and businessman, Simon Mwangi Kuria, PeshMatt embarked on its journey from obscurity to ubiquity.

Located in Busia County, specifically in Bumala town, the supermarket had modest beginnings.

It all began with a small kiosk, a humble endeavor by Maina, a Nyandarua native who had called Busia home for decades.

Initially, the kiosk primarily stocked fast-moving items, catering to the demands of the predominantly Luhya community in the area.

With time, the kiosk quickly outgrew its small confines as the demand for their products continued to soar.

He decided to transform their modest kiosk into a towering retail establishment that would later be known as PeshMatt Supermarket.
