Susan Makau is a businesswoman operating three boutiques on Ronald Ngala Street in Nairobi, offering a diverse range of clothing for women, men, and children.

In a recent interview, she shared that she launched her business in 2016 after leaving her job.

Makau previously worked as a receptionist at a hotel in Nairobi, where she earned a monthly salary of Ksh 20,000.

However, this income was insufficient to cover her expenses, particularly as she was responsible for paying school fees for her two sons, prompting her to seek alternative opportunities.

”When I started entrepreneurship, I said to myself that I would never go back to employment because I had spent a lot of years making money for someone else for just a little benefit. If I only focused on building myself, I think I would be far from where I am today,’’ she said.

Makau disclosed that she initiated her venture with a seed capital of Ksh 40,000, leveraging her understanding of the industry acquired from her upbringing in a family engaged in the clothing trade.

Currently, her three shops collectively generate approximately Ksh 300,000 in monthly revenue.

Boutique business in Kenya

The boutique business in Kenya has gained significant popularity in recent years, driven by a growing demand for fashionable clothing, particularly among women.

To succeed in the boutique industry, conducting thorough market research is essential.

Understanding customer preferences and identifying trending styles allows boutique owners to curate collections that resonate with their target audience.

Location plays a critical role in the success of a boutique. Choosing a high-traffic area, especially in urban centers like Nairobi or Mombasa, can significantly impact sales.

A strategic location increases visibility and accessibility, drawing in potential customers who may not be aware of the boutique otherwise.

Establishing strong relationships with reliable suppliers is another key factor.

Boutique owners need to source quality clothing at competitive prices to maintain profitability while offering unique pieces that appeal to their clientele.

Additionally, obtaining the necessary business permits and licenses is mandatory for operating a boutique.
