The Influential Mt. Kenya Foundation Billionaires And Its History

The Mount Kenya Foundation (MKF) has once again been thrust into the limelight after meeting former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who is prepping for the 2022 presidential race. MKF was formed in 2016 and comprises the super wealthy in the Mt Kenya region. The grouping, as reported by the Standard, is “known to pull strings behind the scenes” and has had great influence during the Kibaki reign and the current President’s Uhuru Kenyatta regime.

MFK was formed to transform the image of Central Kenya by fighting illicit brew through the Epuka Ulevi (avoid alcoholism) campaign and mobilising locals to register as voters.
So who are the members of MKF?

Peter Munga-Former Equity Bank Chairman Peter Munga

The 78 year old billionaire is a man of many firsts. He is the founder of Equity Bank and served as the chairman until 2018 when he resigned. He is a certified Public Secretary and holds a diploma in Human Resources and Financial Management. Munga is the Chair of the National Oil Corporation and a Director in Micro-Enterprise Support Programme Trust (MESPT), British AmericanInvestments Company(Kenya Ltd) , Rockfeller Foundation and Equatorial Nut Processors. He is the current chairman of MKF.
Munga is seen to be leaning on Raila’s presidency having equated him to South African icon Nelson Mandela.

Titus Ibui-Lapsset Chairman

He is the founder and executive director of Bell Industries Limited doubles as Lapsset Chairman. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and a Masters of Business Administration. He is a senior member of MKF. He is deeply connected in the system and this can be seen from the controversial Kemsa tender his company won.

George Muhoho-Former Kenya Airports Authority Chairman

He is President Uhuru Kenyatta’s uncle and a man who has had a close connection with the First family since the presidency of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. The former KAA chairman served as an ordained Catholic priest in 1963 until 1976 when he called it quits. He also served as Juja MP and later as chaplain of the University of Nairobi. He is among the founding members of MKF.

Michael Waweru-Former Kenya Revenue Authority Commissioner General

Another moneyed member of MKF. He served as KRA commissioner General before his appointment as the chair of the East African Cables. He served as the director of EA Cables since August 6,2012.

He was the founder and chairman of Mastermind Tobacco Kenya. The late billionaire was a founding member of MKF.

Dennis Waweru-Former Dagoretti South MP

The former MP sits on the board of MFK and is tasked with linking elected leaders and the group. He does the ground work for these rich men.
