Over the years a number of Kenyan learning institutions have hit the headlines over the huge amounts of money spent on the construction of monstrous and stylish gates. These huge sums of money have had members of the public questioning the legitimacy of the figures linked to the construction, and the significance of the expensive gates.
Some of the top universities in the country have invested in their main gates to the tune of millions of shillings both for the style and size. WoK in this article takes a look at some of the most expensive and stylish university gates in Kenya.
Egerton University
In June 2019, the Njoro-based university joined the league of Kenyan universities with the best architecturally designed gates in the country. According to reports, the gate was constructed for Ksh70 million.
The stylishly designed gate also houses the university’s security control complex. The complex boasts a central piece, entrance and exit. It also has a guardroom, control room and a watch tower.
The complex also has a security room and a minimart where students, staff and visitors can shop.
The gate boasts a 100-meter dual carriage walkway leading into the school.
Egerton Vice-Chancellor Rosa Mwonya stated that the gate has multiple features that are of huge benefit to the area.
“Plans for the construction of the gate were initiated in 2007 by the previous administration. Every year after that, funds were allocated for its construction, but the project never took off until 2017 when I became the VC,” she said during the June 2019 launch.
“This is a complex which includes a mini supermarket for stocking university farm produce. It also has a bookshop and a security system located in one area,” she added.
Mwonya noted that the university took into consideration when building the gate. She noted that the Garissa University attack was a key factor in shaping the school’s security measures.
Kenyatta University
Kenyatta University is among the leading institutions of higher learning in Kenya. The university compiled the construction of their Ruiru Main Campus gate about 8 years ago.
According to a report by the Standard, a school official who spoke to the publication on condition of anonymity revealed that construction of the university’s perimeter wall and main gate cost a whooping Ksh20 million.
The gate has security offices, where guards ensure maximum security in the institution, inspecting vehicles and visitors going in and out of the institution.
The gate also boasts a dual carriage road that leads in and out of the university, allowing for the smooth flow of traffic in and out of the university.
Maasai Mara University
The Narok-based university boasts one of the most stylish gates built by Kenyan learning institutions.
Though the cost of construction remains unknown to the public, the gate’s elegant design is sure to have cost a fortune.
Modelled into the top of the gate are two metallic projections with rounded tips, somewhat depicting the club (rungu) often associated with the pastoral Maasai community.
The gate also houses the university’s security control complex and has a watch tower.
Pwani University
Pwani University is among the leading institutions of higher learning in Coast region. Located in Kikambala, Kilifi County, the university boasts one of the most stylish gates among colleges in Kenya.
