Born on January 21st, 1951, in Nairobi, Kenya, Ashok Shah’s life story is one of determination, resilience, and remarkable entrepreneurial success.

He embarked on his business journey in 1971, taking the path less traveled after facing financial obstacles that forced him to discontinue his pursuit of professional ACCA exams at level 2.

Despite these challenges, Shah’s tenacity and commitment led him to carve out an inspiring path in the world of business.

Ashok Shah’s educational journey included completing his GCE O Levels in 1969, and he furthered his knowledge by pursuing accounting studies with Pitmans and the Royal Society of Arts in the United Kingdom. His dedication to learning paved the way for his future endeavors.

Father Shavji Kachra Zhankharia (Shah) migrated from India to Madagascar and later to Kenya before World War 1 in the 1920s. He established a retail shop, and Ashok Shah subsequently joined, playing a pivotal role in expanding and transforming the business on a larger scale.

As of today, Ashok Shah serves as the Director and Chairman of several successful companies, each with its unique niche and contribution to Kenya’s business landscape.

Oriental Perfumery Works: Pioneering Diversification

In 1970, Shah laid the foundation for Oriental Perfumery Works. It involved in manufacturing perfumes, hair oil, foodstuffs, vinegar, and rose sherbet juices, the company later shifted its focus to the packaging of cooking oil imported from Malaysia and Singapore.

Krish Commodities Ltd: A Leading Player in the Market

Incorporated in 1996, Krish Commodities Ltd quickly rose to prominence in Kenya’s business landscape.

The company specializes in importing bulk commodities such as rice, sugar, wheat, cooking oil, and kitchenware. Notably, the launch of the Sunrice brand in 2004 marked a significant turning point for the company.

The popular Sunrice brand of rice has been incorporated into all the supermarkets in Kenya.

Today, Krish Commodities controls a substantial 60% market share for premium rice, solidifying its position as a major player in Kenya’s fast-moving consumer goods sector.

Aside from Krish Commodities Ltd, another notable venture is My Pasta Ltd, incorporated in 2017. The company is based in Kilifi.

It boasts the distinction of being the first manufacturing plant for spaghetti and pasta in Kenya, as well as the second in East Africa. This factory specializes in producing the popular Spago brand of spaghetti and pasta.

Diverse Ventures and Philanthropic Endeavors

Ashok Shah’s contributions extend beyond the business realm.

His commitment to philanthropy is evident through his efforts to support less fortunate individuals in Kenya, India, and the United Kingdom. He has supplied foodstuffs, offered medical assistance, and contributed to educational initiatives, leaving a positive impact on multiple communities.

Furthermore, Shah has been an active participant in various clubs and organizations.

He served as the Chairman of Coast Gymkhana, Mombasa, from 2013 to 2015 and provided advisory services to the club’s management under trustees from 2016 to 2019. He was also a member of the Lions Club of Mombasa from 1998 to 2018, contributing to numerous committees.

Recognition and Future Aspirations

Ashok Shah’s exceptional contributions have not gone unnoticed. His dedication to community and business excellence earned him the prestigious Head of State Commendation in December 2022.

Additionally, he has been nominated by the Hindu Council of Kenya for the King’s Award in the United Kingdom, which could potentially result in an OBE or MBE in 2024. His commitment to positive change continues, as he has also been nominated for the Kenyan Head of State Award in December 2023.
