There are 47 senators in Kenya each representing their respective counties. The senate comprises dollar millionaires who have been in the political, legal and business fields for quite a long period of time. In this article, we take a look at some of the richest senators in Kenya and how they acquired their immense wealth.
Gideon Moi
Gideon Moi is the senator of Baringo County and the son of Kenya’s second president – Daniel Arap Moi. He has been active in politics since 2003 when he was first elected as a Member of Parliament. The 58 year old is currently the chairman of Kenya African National Union (KANU) political party. His wealth mostly comes from his father’s acquisitions which contribute to his Sh70 billion net worth. Gideon owns the Standard Media Group, ranches in the rift valley, real estate property and huge acres of land spread out across the country. He owns three helicopters, a fleet of expensive vehicles and investments in the aviation, transport and agriculture sector. He comes in as the richest senator in Kenya as of 2021.

Moses Wetangula
Moses Wetangula is the senator for Bungoma County and the party leader for FORD Kenya political party. He has been active in politics since 2003 when he was first elected as Sirisia Constituency Member of Parliament. He later served in different positions of the government including Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Trade during Kibaki’s government. The 65 year old owns a mansion in Karen that sits on 10 acres of land, drives a fleet of luxurious vehicles including a Land Rover discovery and runs a law firm called Wetangula and Company Advocates. His net worth is estimated to be up to Sh2.4 billion.
Amos Wako
Amos Wako is the Senator for Busia County and former attorney general of Kenya – a position he served for 20 years from May 1991 to 26 August 2011. During his tenure as attorney general, he oversaw transition from one party to multi-party democracy in December 1991 as well as transition of power from President Moi to President Kibaki. He is also a seasoned lawyer having graduated from the prestigious University of London and runs a law firm called Wako and Company advocates. He owns two mansions in Nairobi and Busia, has investments in Real estate, insurance and legal sector and also serves in the faculty board of law at the University of Nairobi. According to Tuko, his net worth is estimated at US$5 million.
Charles Kibiru
Charles Kibiru is the current senator for Kirinyaga County. Before he joined the senatorial race in 2017, little was known about this man. He is still one of the unpopular senators in the senate of Kenya as of 2021. He first made headlines when he ran for the Kirinyaga senatorial seat as an independent candidate and clinched the position defeating Jubilee’s Daniel Karaba. The 55 year old began his career at Nairobi Water Company where he worked as the Commercial Director from August 2004 to May 2010 before quitting and becoming an entrepreneur. In 2014, Kibiru together with his business associates founded the classy Thika Greens Golf Resort. The luxurious resort sits on a 1,700 acre piece of land in the outskirts of Thika town. The one-of-a-kind resort has a 18 hole championship golf course that is one of the best golf courses in the country. The resort is estimated to be worth 650 million US Dollars making Charles Kibiru one of the Richest Senators in Kenya.

Johnson Sakaja
Arthur Johnson Sakaja is the senator for Nairobi County. He has been active in politics since 2011 and previously served as a nominated member of parliament for The National Alliance (TNA) and as the national chairman for the same party. Sakaja runs several businesses including a landscaping company, consultancy firm known as Arthur Johnson Consultants and serves as the Chairman of the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association. He also serves as the Chairperson for the Committee of Labor and Social Welfare and Vice chairman of the Committee on National Security, Defense and Foreign Relations.

Mithika Linturi
Mithika Linturi is the Senator for Meru County having been elected in the 2017 elections. Mithika is a renowned businessman in the real estate, insurance and education sectors. He first joined politics in 2007 when he was first elected as the Member of Parliament representing Igembe South constituency. Some of the properties owned by Linturi include Mae Ridge Estate estimated to be worth Sh56 million, Chuna Estate in Kitengela worth Sh4.2 million, Kitengela International School, a Sh7.2 million worth plot in Kajiado, a Sh100.8 million worth land in Kitengela, a Sh3 million worth plot in Runda and a Sh7.2 million piece of land in Ntima, Igoki. He also has investments in the construction industry making the 52 year old one of the richest senators in Kenya.

Prof Kithure Kindiki
Prof Kithure Kindiki is the current Tharaka-nithi senator serving for the second term. Kindiki has been active in politics since 2008 and four years later he was elected as senator. He made headlines when he was selected by Deputy President William Ruto to represent him in the ICC case in 2008. He served as the majority leader in the senate from 2013 to 2017 and later as deputy speaker from August 2017 to 22nd May 2020 before he was de-whipped from the position by his party. He is an alumni of the University of Pretoria where he studied International law. He has investments in the real estate, agriculture and banking sector. He also practices law and runs a legal firm by the name Kithure Kindiki and Associates Law Firm based in Nairobi.
Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen
Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen is the current senator of Elgeyo-Marakwet county and former senate majority leader. The 42 year old is an alumni of the University of Pretoria, American University, Washington College of Law and the University of Nairobi where he acquired his degrees. He practices law and runs a law firm by the name Sing’oe, Murkomen and Sigei Advocates. He also does large scale farming in his home county of Elgeyo-Marakwet where he plants maize, avocados and tea plantations. Murkomen owns a Ksh 200 million house in Karen, Boghani Villa as well as a bungalow in his village.
