The Moi family name has been deeply woven into Kenya’s history, rooted in significant political influence and national development. It is, therefore, a testament to their ambition that Gideon Moi’s sons have chosen to forge their own paths, embracing diverse fields where they showcase their unique talents while proudly upholding the family’s enduring legacy.
Grandsons to Kenya’s second President, Daniel arap Moi— Kimoi and Kigen, they have established themselves as accomplished individuals in their own right, making notable contributions in fields such as agriculture, business, technology, and philanthropy. Each of them has embraced a unique path, blending innovation, determination, and a sense of purpose to build successful careers that honor their family’s legacy while leaving their own distinct mark on Kenya’s development.
Here are their successful careers as told by WoK:
1. Kimoi Moi
The eldest son of the former Baringo Senator, James David Kimoi Moi, has ventured into the world of technology and innovation with a strong focus on agriculture. Armed with a degree in civil engineering from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, he boldly chose to forgo a conventional engineering career to pursue his passion for farming, particularly in potato cultivation.
His passion for trade has propelled him to notable heights, earning him the position of Director at Agrico East Africa Company—renowned as one of the leading potato seed companies in the country.
A trained engineer, James David Kimoi Moi also serves as a director at Kongoy Farm, a family-owned enterprise specializing in large-scale farming in the Rift Valley. Based in Nakuru County, the farm imports an impressive 200 to 300 tonnes of high-quality potato seeds from the Netherlands annually. These seeds are then locally propagated on the farm before being sold at premium rates, cementing the company’s reputation as a key player in the region’s agricultural sector.
Under his leadership, the company strives to empower farmers by supplying high-quality seeds and integrating advanced technology into agricultural practices, ensuring increased productivity and sustainability.
2. Kigen Moi
Kigen Moi, the second eldest son of Gideon and Zahra Moi, has made remarkable strides in the energy production sector. An alumnus of Bristol University in England, Kigen is recognized for his entrepreneurial pursuits, opting to lead a private life while skillfully leveraging his family’s network to forge his own path as a successful innovator and leader in the industry.
He is currently the director of Sosian Energy, an independent power producer owned by his father, who reacquired a majority stake in Sosian Menengai Geothermal Power from Devki Group, led by billionaire Narendra Raval. Sosian Energy is one of Kenya’s top IPPs, contributing 28% to the country’s power supply and supplying 22 megawatts to the national grid.
While their father Gideon Moi remains a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, his sons have chosen diverse paths, reflecting the dynamism of the Moi family. Their successes not only honor their heritage but also contribute to Kenya’s economic, technological, and social development.
By embracing individuality while upholding family values, Kigen and Kimoi exemplify the next generation of leaders poised to leave an indelible mark on Kenya’s future. Their journeys are a testament to resilience, ambition, and the enduring influence of the Moi legacy.
