Winfred Wangui: Kibaki’s Controversial Daughter Who Almost Married Armenian Crook Artur Margaryan

Winfred Wangui is the daughter to former Othaya Member of Parliament and businesswoman, Mary Wambui.

She was a former official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the President Mwai Kibaki regime.

In this article, WoK takes a look at Wangui’s relationship with Armenian Artur Margaryan. The Artur brothers, Margaryan and Sargsyan were deported from Kenya in 2007.

Background

Wangui is the daughter to Mary Wambui. The ex-Othaya MP was reportedly romantically involved with President Kibaki, sparking speculations that Wangui may be the former Head of State’s daughter.

During an interview with Easy FM in 2007, Wangui said that her full name is Winfred Wangui Mwai. However, she declined to discuss her relationship with the former First Family, saying that “those who know the truth will stay with the truth.”

Career

Though details of her whole career remain scanty, it is known that she was an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during President Kibaki’s reign.

It is through her work that she met Margaryan.

Relationship with Artur Margaryan

Wangui told Easy FM in the 2007 interview that she met the Artur brothers through a mutual friend during a holiday in Dubai in 2005. They interacted and later begun doing business together which she described as “general trading”.

Their working relationship eventually blossomed into a love affair with Margaryan.

At the time, Wangui declared her love for Margaryan, stating that he was her boyfriend and that she was looking up to a future together.

“Of course, if we get married we will have children, God willing,” she said.

Scandal

The Artur brothers hit the headlines in 2006 when they were deported after a serious security breach at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) when they allegedly manhandled security officers and drew guns at customs officers to avoid their luggage being checked.

Wangui was one of the civil servants interdicted following the JKIA drama. She was alleged to have used her office to get protocol officers at the airport to offer VIP treatment to the Artur brothers.

ODM leader Raila Odinga subsequently claimed that they are mercenaries that had been contracted to eliminate certain opposition leaders.

In a report to President Kibaki, then-Immigration minister Gideon Konchellah described the Artur brother as international criminals.
