In summary:

  • Winnie Maina is an entrepreneur par excellence and she has ventured into the field of aesthetics.
  • She used an approximate Ksh 1 million to set up Jalad Aesthetic Clinic which offers anti-aging treatment, hair restoration, skin growth excision among others.

A brief check at her LinkedIn profile reveals that Winnie Maina is an industrious young medic who loves what she does.

She is the founder and Managing Director of Jalad Aesthetic Clinic in Nairobi. The 32 year old ventured into the field of aesthetics by establishing the facility in 2022.

Here is the story as told by WoK.

Education Background

Maina studied Clinical Medicine at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).

As a clinician, she worked at Jamii Hospital and the Nairobi Women’s Hospital.

The 32 year old would then pursue a Bachelors of Science in Health System Management at Kenya Methodist University (KeMU).

Starting Her Clinic

Despite being passionate about dermatology and aesthetics, she didn’t have the required skills when she incepted Jalad Aesthetic Clinic in 2022.

This necessitated hiring of experts while she went on to learn the skills.

According to an interview she granted Standard Media, she used an estimated Ksh 1 million as her capital. This amount went into paying rent, salaries and acquisition of necessary medical supplies.

Prior to that, she had conducted a market research which went into establishing the market needs and demands.

You need to know where your product or service is going to fit within the population, because as you know, you’re not the only one in the market, so, is your approach viable?” she tells Standard.

Offering Hair Restoration

At the start of her venture, Maina had to hire specialists before slowly learning the skills.

According to her, the field of aesthetics has rapidly grown in Kenya and more medics are embracing it.

Aesthetic expertise was previously cut out for cosmetic surgeons but now it has really evolved because you find that dentists can do it, nurses can do it and recently even beauticians. So you see it’s growing,” she says.

Maina is now capable of offering hair restoration for people struggling with male pattern baldness. Additionally, her clinic performs a procedure known as fractional microneedling which stimulates production of collagen hence a solution for wrinkles.

Other services at Jalad Aesthetic Clinic are: keloid excision, acne treatment, breast augmentation, liposuction, hair transplant, breast lift and scar revision.
