Mtumba man aka Mayau Dreamchaser has dominated banter on social media platforms thanks to his ingenuity in selling second hand clothes. Through his theatrics, he has landed a permanent job as an influencer at Devine Collections. He has also attracted other goodies from Best Mtumba Bales, notable personalities and other companies as you will read elsewhere in this article.
So who is Mtumba Man?
For beginners, his real name is Sande Mayua. He was born in Gem Dudi, Got Regea in Siaya County. On Jalang’o TV he gave is name as Steve Opondo.
Education
In an interview on Jalango TV, Mtumba Man revealed that he was in more than one primary school because of the financial constraints his family was facing. He would repeat classes as he was at home most of the time tending to cattles. He managed to sit for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination and managed to score a C-(minus). Steve was the third best student in that year’s KCSE examinations.
He finished high school in 2011 where he got a grade of C(minus).

Career
After high school, the young man relocated to Kisumu to look for jobs as life at home was unbearable. He started out as a shop assistant in Lanet, Nakuru County where he used to measure flour and would be paid a paltry kes143. After a while he ventured into selling mitumbas in Nakuru but it did not sprout well prompting him to move back to Kisumu town. To woo customers, Mtumba started to crossdress and made hilarious remarks like ‘Ngara mpaka useme umepata mubaba’’ as he impressed on his customers to buy from him. From the streets of Kisumu where he was selling women’s clothes, Mtumba man became an overnight sensation. His videos went viral and that’s how he landed in Nairobi for an interview with the highly influential Jalango.
Deals
The young man’s marketing skills have landed him a job. Devine collections has given him a 5-year deal as the brand ambassador and official influencer which will see him get accommodation, salary and outfits. The clothing company dresses celebrities like DJ Mo, Maina Kageni, Jalango and many more. He will no longer have to dress as a woman as Devin Collections only deals with men’s clothing.
Jane of Best Mtumba Bales located in Gikomba gifted him two bales of mitumba clothes worth 50,000. Notify Logistics, which is known for renting spaces to business people, offered to take him through an entrepreneurship program and also gifted him 100,000 to start up.
Hon Alinur Mohamed
Youthful politician cum philanthropist Alinur Mohamed offered to “fully pay for him a holiday vacation to a destination of his choice. I will also pay his 6 months rent before he settles”, he wrote on his Facebook page.
Girlfriend
Mtumba man was in a relationship that ended on a sour note. His girlfriend dumped him for a KDF soldier but the two talk once in a while. Sharing his love story with radio presenter Ali, the new celebrity in town said:
“I had dated her since 2012, in 2013 we started having issues and on valentines day of the same year she dumped me.
I had bought flowers and was waiting for her not knowing she was out with someone else.
She was ‘snatched’ by a KDF Soldier working at Lanet.
After she left I used to cry and almost committed suicide. Hapo ndio nilijua kumbe mapenzi ni real.
She was my first love. Today we still talk once in a while as we are have become adults.”
