Horrid stories of negligence, swapping of children and other unprofessional practices in hospitals have been reported in the media in the recent past. A video of a woman giving birth unattended in a Shalom Hospital reception caused an uproar on social media platforms resulting in legal action against the hospital staff. Pumwani has been in the news for baby swapping or reports of the infants dying under unclear circumstances.
This is the reason why expectant mothers opt for hospitals like the Aga Khan but it doesn’t come cheap.

Maternity Services
Expectant parents are allowed to visit Aga Khan’s maternity unit to have a look at the facilities and engage the staff about the services offered. The team has maternity care professionals who include midwives, nurses, obstetricians, paediatricians and anaesthetists.

Services offered include:
Antenatal care, antenatal clinic, medical antenatal clinic, antenatal classes, family planning, caesarean delivery, pain relief options for labour and new born and pediatric care.

Cost of services
Normal delivery cost: The cost for a normal delivery at the Aga Khan has gone up to kes150,000 from kes120 in 2016.
Caesarean cost: Expectant mothers who opt for Caesarean section pay kes280,000, kes60,000 more than was charged in 2016.

Other packages you can opt for:
Childbirth education-kes3,000
Lamaze-kes5,500
Well baby clinic-sh6,000
Doula-kes15,000
Five-star luxury

Why the charges have gone up
The increase in cost is across board as a result of introduced taxes on medical equipment and medical profession demands for higher wages.

Payment
If you are paying cash, a deposit will be required upon admission. Deposit requirements will be provided by the credit control department. Patients paying with personal cheques are required to make prior arrangements with the credit control department.
For all corporate /insurance patients, the hospital will seek a guarantee of payment from your employer/insurance.
