Mwende Mbevi Muthama: Meet Visionary Woman In Charge Of The Kenyatta Trust

The Kenyatta Trust is an organization founded by President Uhuru Kenyatta to help bright and vulnerable students who are beneficiaries of its high school scholarship program. The trust also supports the students through university and other tertiary institutions.

The Trust is headed by Mwende Mbevi Muthama who is the executive director. Mwende is in charge of overseeing all operational and administrative functions at the Trust. She also oversees all activities surrounding the mentorship programs as well as the Economic Empowerment project which has a countrywide footprint.

“The Kenyatta Trusts’ priorities from 2014-2019 will focus on areas of education, mentorship, and training of young men and women to serve in the public service sector, community transformation and empowerment and, student welfare. The Kenyatta Trusts’ directors and management are committed to more youth in Kenya being empowered and transformed into citizens of change,” Mwende was quoted saying by the organization.

Education

According to her LinkedIn profile, Mwende attended Daystar University between 1992 and 1996. At Daystar she studied and later graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Community Development. She is also trained in emotional intelligence and coaching.

She also has a diploma in counselling psychology from the Amani Counselling Centre. In 2016, she acquired a certificate in corporate governance to enable her to better run the organisation.

First family

At The Kenyatta Trust, Mwende is superior to two members of the first family; Ngina Kenyatta, the President’s daughter and Nyokabi Kenyatta Muthama, who is the head of state’s sister.

Other than executing her role at The Kenyatta Trust, Mwende also works as the marketing director for Manda Orchids, one of the largest orchid farms in East and Central Africa. Before her appointment by the Kenyatta’s, she worked as a volunteer at the Ahadi Trust, an organisation known for fighting jigger infestation in the community.
