Education Background Of Citizen TV News Anchors

Citizen TV is arguably one of the best television stations in Kenya and statistically enjoys the largest share of viewership in the country. The Royal Media Services (RMS) owned media houses employs some of the best journalist in the region and is known to poach promising talent from other local media houses.

To ensure it stays ahead of the competition, Citizen TV is home to some of the most renowned media personalities in the country, including veteran, multiple-time award winning journalist, Jeff Koinange. Some of these individuals perfected their trade working in various other media houses before they were poached by RMS while others rose through the ranks.

In this article, WoK digs deeper into the educational backgrounds of the brilliant minds that have made the media house the most preferred among Kenyan households.

Jeff Koinange

Jeff attended Hospital Hill in Parklands from 1972 to 1974. Later, he joined St. Mary’s and where he sat for his A levels in 1984. He then proceeded to Kingsborough Community College in the US to pursue Broadcast Technology and Management, where he graduated with honors. He gave the valedictorian speech having graduated top of his class. This earned him a scholarship to the prestigious New York University. In 1991, he graduated from the University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Broadcast Journalism.

Victoria Rubadiri

The award-winning journalist began her primary school education in Kenya but her family relocated to the US when she was aged 10.

After completing the remainder of her primary education, she joined Atlantic City High School in Atlanta before attending Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she graduated with a Bachelor’s​ Degree in Broadcast Journalism.

Linus Kaikai

Kaikai holds a Masters Degree in international journalism from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

Yvonne Okwara

Okwara attended Kianda School before proceeding to the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry.

She is a graduate of the Bloomberg/ Africa Leadership Initiative Media fellowship.

Trevor Ombija

The Citizen TV Monday Report news anchor attended Anding’o Opanga Secondary school where he sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations before proceeding to the University of Nairobi where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism.

Waihiga Mwaura

The award-winning journalist holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree from the Africa Nazarene University. He also holds a Masters degree in Communication.

Lilian Muli

The celebrated journalist attended Lavington Primary School before proceeding to Loreto Convent Msongari where she sat for her KCSE. She later joined Daystar University where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Communication and Newscasting.

She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi.

Francis Gachuri

The renowned political editor attended Senior Chief Koinange High School in Kiambaa, Kiambu County. He then proceeded to Moi University for his higher education.

Jamila Mohamed

The Citizen TV managing editor attended Ngara Girls’ High School. She then joined the University of Nairobi where she studied Journalism and Media Studies before undertaking an executive masters study at the Aga Khan University.

Willis Raburu

Raburu is an alumnus of Chemilil High School from which he joined Moi University for his undergraduate. The 10 Over 10 show host is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Strategic Corporate Communications at the United States International University (USIU).

Swaleh Mdoe

Swaleh attained his Kenya Certificate of Education from Tudor Day School in Mombasa. He later attended the Media Institute and graduated with a Diploma in Human Rights and Media. Mdoe proceeded to Malaspina University College, Canada where he pursued a degree in Media Studies.

The 54-year-old news anchor later joined the United States International University (USIU) where he attained a certificate in journalism.

Mashirima Kapombe

The award-winning Swahili news presenter attended Consolata Primary School, Nyeri county. She then proceeded to Gatimu Ngandu and successfully completed and passed her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and joined Daystar University, Athi River campus in 2008. She graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication.

Lulu Hassan

She attended Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa for her High School Education. She later trained as a cabin crew hostess, human resource manager and ticketing officer at Salrene Travel Operations College.

She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication and Journalism.

Sam Gituku

Gituku is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) from the Exel Institute of Professionals. He attended Moi University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Publishing and Media Studies.

He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Communication from the University of Nairobi.
