Inspector General of Police (IG) nominee Japhet Koome has revealed that he is worth KSh 89 million.

Koome made the revelation while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Appointments on Tuesday, November 8.

The committee comprising of MPs from the minority and the majority side of the House is tasked with grilling nominees and determine their suitability for the role appointed to.

Koome attributed his net worth to several investments, shares, financial savings, vehicles and parcels of land in his rural area where he practices farming.

“I have a capital share of 57,000 in Police Sacco. I have vehicles, and two tractors because farming is my hobby. In terms of land, I have 37 acres… Out of farming produce, I generate KSh 9 million annually

“The land in my rural home is about seven acres. I have two plots of land within my rural home market centre. I also have a plot of land in Nairobi, and that is where I currently live, and two other plots in Kitengela, which I bought through Police Sacco,” Koome explained.

He also explained that he has a liability of KSh 1.1 million in loan.

Koome rose through the ranks to become a Commandant and a Senior Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

He is currently serving as the commandant of the National Police Service Training Campus in Kiganjo.

Koome is also a Civil Engineer by training, having graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1990.

In September, President William Ruto appointment Koome to succeed Hillary Mutyambai who resigned and proceeded to terminal leave.

Speaking while announcing his Cabinet Secretaries at State House, Ruto noted that he had accepted Mutyambai’s resignation and wished him well.

“After discussions with Mutyambai and in consideration of his service to the nation and his health, I have accepted that he will proceed on terminal leave in the six months that he has on his contract,” Ruto stated.
