His life will probably never be the same again. His family has been left badly traumatised and the prospects of getting justice remain very slim. That’s the reality Felix Orinda, popularly known as DJ Evolve, will live with. Talking for the first time on NTV, Felix struggled to express the trauma he has been undergoing since an overzealous Embakasi East MP Babu Owino shot him in the neck twice at the B-Club where he worked as the resident DJ.
What could have caused the DJ to shoot him?
According to a report carried on SDE, the two were acquaintances and the politician would always chat Felix when he was in the club. On that fateful night, the two were on good terms and the DJ would go to Babu’s table and take requests of his preferred songs. The tables seemed to have changed at around 7am when the politician was about to leave. Revellers told the publication that the two were arguing over who has the big gun before a miffed Babu drew his Steyr M9-A1 and shot him at close range. It is not clear if they meant real guns or something else.
Aftermath
The ‘low-key assassin’ as the disk jockey is also known, was rushed to Nairobi Hospital on January 17 where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and was released on June 18. It had earlier been reported that he had been released in mid-May but it turned out that he had only been moved to the general ward. His health has improved tremendously but he can do little by himself. DJ Evolve is numb from his mid torso down. He speech is impaired as a tube has been placed on his neck to clear and suction his airwave.
Being released from hospital
Speaking to NTV, the DJ said he could not sleep as he kept having flashbacks of what happened the night the self styled professor shot him at point blank. This has since improved as he can now sleep. He cannot move his limbs and has to depend on others to take care of him. The mother has been taking care of his son since he was shot to date. The DJ is now being nursed at home by caregivers assigned by his doctors.
On forgiving Babu
Felix’s mother was distraught when he learned of his son’s shooting at his place of work. She has never talked to Babu and doesn’t think she can. DJ Evolve denied ever forgiving the legislator and instead said he leaves everything to God and his the Kenyan Justice System.
Babu Asked if he was forgiven by DJ Evolve
This is a subject Babu has always tried to avoid. Asked if he had been forgiven by DJ Evolve, he answered:
“……..it is a matter that is between me and God and I chose to forgive myself and I want to tell you, we cannot change the past but we can change the future. Let us focus on what is coming in the foreseeable future, let us not dwell so much in our past because we can’t change it no matter how much we wish to change it..”
Hospital Bill
Babu has been footing the hospital bill of DJ Evolve. So far he has paid kes7 million of the kes17 million outstanding bill.
Justice System
The MP was released on January 27 on a cash bail of kes10 million by the courts.
