Solomon Gachugu, a self-made technology entrepreneur, has defied the odds and carved his path to success.

Despite lacking any formal education in technology, Solomon managed to carve a niche for himself in the ever-evolving world of information technology, establishing Data Comm Systems and Solution, a thriving technology company that serves clients across Kenya.

Here is his story as told by WoK.

Growing up in Nyandarua County, Solomon faced financial struggles, and his mother worked tirelessly to provide for the family.

After completing his A-levels in 2000, he pursued a degree in accounting at KCA University in Kisumu.

However, post-election violence disrupted his education, forcing him to return to Nyandarua.

Intrigued by the world of computers, Solomon enrolled in computer packages at Tracom College in Nakuru.

Little did he know that this decision would alter the course of his life.

The school’s principal encouraged him to consider a computer engineering course, despite his lack of knowledge in the field. Solomon accepted the challenge, setting the stage for his extraordinary journey.

Upon completing his studies, Solomon embarked on a challenging path.

Armed with Ksh3,500, he quit his job as a cybercafe administrator, where he earned Kshh3,000 per month, to start his own computer business.

He rented a room for Ksh3,500 and went from shop to shop, convincing clients to let him service their computers.

It was an uphill battle marked by capital constraints and the struggle to win customers’ trust.

However, Solomon’s determination and resilience propelled him forward.

Today, Solomon is the founder of Data Comm Systems and Solution, a multi-million-dollar technology company located along Nakuru’s Kenyatta Avenue.

His company provides a wide range of internet and computer services to clients across Kenya. Solomon’s business serves an extensive clientele, including schools, firms, hospitals, government institutions, and individuals.

“If you had asked me years ago if one day I would employ people, I would laugh. But now I’m happy that I have given the youth an opportunity to work in a safe environment and contribute to building the economy of the country,” he said.

Solomon’s journey into the IT sector began in 2005 when he recognized the emerging market for Information Technology (IT) services.

“I started the company because Information Technology (IT) was new in the market back then in 2005. I saw the need to venture and align myself in the niche as a way of giving solutions to people’s problems. We are a Jack of all trades when it comes to technology, I believe we are the best,” he said.

His willingness to venture into uncharted territory would prove to be the catalyst for his success.

In addition to his expertise in traditional IT services, Solomon has displayed a remarkable ability to adapt and diversify his skills.

He obtained certifications from global tech giants like Huawei, Dell, HP, and Microsoft, ensuring that he remains relevant in a rapidly evolving industry.

Furthermore, he expanded his knowledge beyond technology, delving into areas such as water pumping and ground falls. In one instance, he completed a short course on these subjects with a UK-based company and gained certification.

Solomon’s company has also been involved in various projects, such as providing fast internet access through approximately six internet masts erected in three counties.

This commitment to delivering reliable services has garnered the trust of a diverse clientele, leading to referrals and sustained growth.

Despite his significant achievements, Solomon remains humble and dedicated to empowering others.

He mentors students on attachment and offers advice to companies on technology-related matters.

His ultimate goal is to establish a nationwide fiber company in the next five years.

“In the next five years, I would like to own a fibre company that operates countrywide. I have done a short course on cyber-crime offered by Michigan University,” he explained his vision.
