Lawyer Makau Mutua has hit out at Kenyans who travel to the US and share photos of themselves online.

In a post on his social media accounts, the distinguished professor wondered why the same Kenyans don’t share such photos smiling when they visit African countries.

“I often see Kenyan visitors to the US excitedly posting photos of themselves with HUGE smiles arriving at some airport in America,”

“What I rarely see are pictures of these same folks in some African country. Yo, visiting America is no longer an achievement, if it ever was. Instead, tell us what you are accomplishing there,” he posted.

The lawyer said it was better to take photos digging wells in their villages in Kenya than flying to the US to do nothing that can benefit the country.

“Better yet, post pictures of yourself digging a well in your village in Kenya or speaking at a high school. Or even doing the Lord’s work in a troubled, war-torn country somewhere on earth,”

“Let’s stop this US-visitor picture pornography. It’s passé,” Mutua added.

Mutua resigned as Dean of the University at Buffalo Law School in December 2014 after a controversial seven-year term.

He remains a SUNY Distinguished Professor and the Floyd H. & Hilda L. Hurst Faculty Scholar at the Law School.

He was the first professor in the history of the Law School to be named SUNY Distinguished Professor.

The professor is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

In October 2015, he joined the World Bank in Washington D.C. to work on governance and human rights.

On 13 January 2017, Mutua was elected to a four-year term as Chairman of the Board of Advisors of the Rome-based International Development Law Organization.

WoK previously covered a story on Mutua opening a hotel in his home county of Kitui.

Dubbed the Kitui Villas, the 10-bed capacity hotel which was originally a five-bedroom house was officially opened by Raila Odinga.

The grand opening was also graced by Makau’s friends in the political class including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Charity Ngilu, Wavinya Ndeti among others.
