Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has pledged to transform Eregi Teachers Training College (ETTC) into a full-fledged university.
According to Teachers Update, the governor stated that the County is collaborating closely with the National Government to realise the ambition of offering a variety of courses to students in the region and neighbouring counties.
“This is among one of our ambitious development plans that Kakamega County aims to actualise and enrol more students in special courses,” he said.
Additionally, a task team constituted by Barasa suggested that the ETTC be upgraded to a constituent campus of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.
The governor was engaging with Idhako South community stakeholders who had come to visit him at his house in Harambee, Matungu Sub-County.
The university will be located in Ikolomani Sub County, where the college was established.
Barasa also underlined his administration’s dedication to vital programmes, such as transforming Milimani and Imalava dispensaries into self-sufficient health centres.
Others include equipping Sheywe Polytechnic, erecting Lukose Bridge, gazetted Imalaba Market and constructing Shisejeri Modern Market.
Barasa also guaranteed the community that Butwehe’s final mile water connectivity in Kaluni, Shanjesto, and Madivini will be completed.
He was accompanied by Chief Officer for Special Programmes Patrick Butichi and other county authorities.
The task committee determined that the institution had sufficient acreage, classrooms, lecture halls, staff quarters, restrooms, labs and an initial intake of 3000 students.
The Catholic Mill Hill Fathers created the institute in 1949 to train teachers.
Eregi TTC is a public registered Teachers Training College founded in 1949 and sponsored by the Ministry of Education, specifically the State Department of Basic Education Act 2013.
Over time, the institution has experienced expansion in academic offerings, student enrollment, staffing, academic excellence and participation in extra-curricular activities.
The college offers Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE), Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and Diploma in Primary Teacher Education Upgrade (DPTE Upgrade) courses.
