Labor and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary nominee Dr Alfred Mutua was on Sunday, August 4 was on the hot seat during the vetting by the National Assembly Commitee on Appointments where he delved into matters regarding his wealth after he revealed his Kshs 462 million networth.
The CS Nominee has in the past shared that he owns a media production company and is one of his income generators. Dubbed the Golden Dreams Company, the firm which he founded at 19 years has produced a number of hit shows that have graced Kenyan screens.
Among his biggest productions is action thriller Cobra Squad, which premiered in 2007 , which showcased a special police taskforce that tracked, found and stopped criminals. The show was a hit, running for two seasons on NTV.
Mutua on the panel shared that the show was among his major successes in his career, and that with the money he earned from the show, he was able to buy his first house in Nairobi.
He also stated in a past interview that the second season made him an additional KShs 11 million , which he pumped into the production company to make other shows. In fact to this day, he still earns from Cobra Squad as it is still running in various countries internationally.
“Cobra Squad was very successful, even across Africa. Even today I still get royalties from it being shown in Zambia, Tanzania and many other countries,” he told the panel.
Cobra Squad was discontinued following the death of the one cast member Angela Wainaina, who perished in the fatal Nakumatt Downtown fire in January 2009.
‘Beba Beba’ was another show that earned the CS Nominee lumpsum amounts of money, as it was a hit on Kenyan television. The show was based on the story of a matatu-owning family and the intugues of the community they deal with. Mutua stated once that his own life experiences inspired him to create the show, which remains one of the best shows to be aired on Kenyan tekevision.
“I came up with BebaBeba TV show after a matatu blocked me while heading to my Golden Dreams Company offices. I wrote the first season and with my friend Victor Muniafu, we cast for the show at the National Theatre. I co-produced it with NTV,” he wrote on his X account in 2021.
He went on to produce another show dubbed ”How To Get Rich In Africa’ adapted from his best-selling book, ‘How To Get Rich In Africa and Other Scerets of Survival’ and it was also a hit. He still get royalties from this show and the book is almost always sold out across different bookstores in the country.
He has also produced different films including ‘An African in America’ where he showed how his life in the United States through different experiences, ‘From Kenya to Harare by Road’, ‘The Role of Propaganda in Leadership and Communication’ and another one called ‘And The Desert Smiled’.
Another notable mention is the production of ‘Passion’ Magazine which was a fashion-focused publication.
Mutua stated that the company is still running and continues to produce various films and shows. It is estimated that the firm is worth KShs 36million, contributing to the assets owned by the CS nominee.
