Billionaire Mombasa Cement proprietor and philanthropist, Hasmukh Patel, also popularly known as Hasuu Patel, has passed away at age 58.
Family spokesperson Samir Bhalo confirmed his death, revealing that he passed away at 1 p.m. while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mombasa.
According to Bhalo, who also serves as the Tudor MCA, Patel had been suffering from stomach pains for two days. He was rushed to Premier Hospital, where he sadly passed away in the Emergency Department.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir also conveyed his profound sorrow over the loss of his friend and esteemed business leader.
“We have learned with sadness of the passing of businessman Hasmukh “Hasuu” Patel of Mombasa Cement Limited in Mombasa. Mr. Patel will be remembered for his active participation in society affairs in Mombasa as well as his generous support for the underprivileged.
“I take this opportunity on behalf of the County Government of Mombasa to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the departed. We will stand with you during this difficult time,” Governor Abdulswamad said in his statement.
The cement magnate’s business empire spanned the wider East African region, encompassing ventures like Corrugated Sheets Limited and Tororo Cement in Uganda. He was renowned for his dedication to eco-friendly practices and technological innovations in production.
Patel was a beloved figure among Mombasa residents. Beyond his entrepreneurial successes, he made substantial contributions to philanthropic efforts, including health, education, and environmental projects.
One of his most notable initiatives was the transformation of the Kibarani dumpsite into a KShs 700 million recreational park, designed to enhance the local environment.
Through the Sahajanad Feeding Centre, he provided meals to tens of thousands of individuals daily.
Patel also covered medical expenses for numerous patients and financed the construction of various facilities to enhance healthcare access in the region.
His philanthropic work has established him as a prominent figure in Mombasa, where he is celebrated for his efforts to uplift the community.
Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro also paid tribute to Patel, calling him a devoted family man renowned for his generosity and steadfast support of the community.
“He was a respected family man who always supported and cared for his community. My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones, friends, and colleagues as they navigate through this difficult time,” said Mung’aro.
