Kenyan doctor Hudson Alakonya attained the Doctor of Philosophy in Oncology on Tuesday, May 23.
Oncology is a specialized branch of medicine focused on the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer.
Following this achievement, he became the first Kenyan to attain that level of academic achievement earning praise from many Kenyans.

“This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without unwavering generosity and guidance from many people. I owe them immeasurable gratitude,” he stated.
Prior to traveling to the United Kingdom to undertake a PhD program, Alakonya held a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Cancer.
He also held a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) degree in Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM).
“My sincere tributes go to my supervisor Prof. Bart Cornelissen and the Cornelissen Lab members for supporting and nurturing me with utmost kindness during my time at the University of Oxford,” he added.
In 2018, Alakonya established a non-profit entity known as the Integrated Cancer Research Foundation (ICRF) in Kenya, focusing on oncology research.
The foundation’s objective is to employ evidence-based research to mitigate the life-threatening nature of cancerous tumors.
He expressed gratitude to his family and the members of ICRF for their unwavering support throughout his academic endeavors.
Additionally, Alakonya acknowledged the Rhodes Trust for awarding him the Rhodes scholarship, which facilitated his postgraduate academic success.
“I am sincerely indebted to the Rhodes Trust for awarding me the Rhodes scholarship that has helped me to achieve my academic and professional ambitions, connected me to the world & transformed my socioeconomic life,” he noted.
