Being a coach is one of those jobs that can leave you depressed if the team you are managing is underperforming. But it is very rewarding when you mould a winning team in both the local and continental assignments. Kenya has produced fairly good football coaches who have gone to coach the national team Harambee Stars.

This writer takes a look at notable coaches in Kenya.

Jacob ‘GHOST’ Mulee

He is one of the most successful coaches Kenya has ever produced. Doubling as a radio presenter, Mulee was firmly on the driver’s seat when Kenya qualified for the 2004 edition of African Cup of Nations (AFCON). This was after a 12 year hiatus from the tournament. Kenya has however never progressed to the knockout stage.

Ghost was reappointed coach in October 2020 but seemingly he had run out of ideas prompting him to quit. He has been replaced by Engin Firat.

Antony Kimani

Coach Kimani took over in an acting capacity as the AFC Leopards Coach, after Andre Mbungo left over the club’s financial woes.

Despite the financial challenges that saw the players go without pay for months, Kimani to marshalled the team to become position six in the 2019/20 FKF Premier League. He has since been replaced by Belgian Patrick Aussems.

Francis Kimanzi

He succeeded Sebastien Migne as Harambee Stars’ Coach. Through his efforts, the team in the past managed to draw against Egypt during the Afcon 2021 qualifiers.

Just like his predecessor Migne, Kimanzi got fired under unclear circumstances in 2020, with the role going back again to Mulee.

Out of the 22 matches played by the Kakamega Boys under his supervision, the team has registered 14 wins, made 5 draws, and at least three losses.

The team also completed second during the 2019/20 league.

Zedekiah Otieno

When he succeeded Frank Ouma as the KCB Football team’s coach, he swore to ensure the team wins.

To make true his words, Zedekiah’s efforts have seen the team win five matches consecutively, in the 2020/21 campaign.

Already, the team boasts being at the top, placing it among possible winners for the highly-contested title.

James Nandwa

Nandwa assembled a team of local players that went to win the CECAFA finals in the past.

Nandwa’s commitment to producing the best players has remained unwavering, despite his numerous dismissals as the coach for various teams.
