Abdi Mohamed: Stellar Career Path Of Absa Bank Kenya New CEO

Absa Bank Kenya has a new chief executive officer. Mr. Abdi Mohamed has been named the new chief executive, replacing Jeremy Awori, who left the lender last year after nearly a decade at the helm.

Mr. Mohamed currently doubles up as Absa Tanzania managing director and acting managing executive for retail and business banking, Africa Regional Operations.

Mr. Mohamed’s appointment is subject to regulatory approval.

“The Board takes this opportunity to sincerely thank Yusuf Omari, who has been the Interim Managing Director, for his commitment while serving on this role. Yusuf will continue as the Interim Managing Director until such time when the regulatory approval process in respect of Abdi’s appointment is completed,” a statement from Absa read.

Career Path

Mr. Mohamed is an accomplished leader and senior executive in banking with over 15 years experience in senior leadership positions in the industry. 

Prior to being appointed as CEO, Mr Mohamed, served as the chief operating officer in the same financial institution for over four years (Feb 2012 – April 2016). 

From May 2016 – Feb 2020, Mr Mohamed was appointed as managing director of Absa Tanzania.

In 2006, he joined Barclays as Absa Bank was then known as Retail Director for Barclays Bank Zambia, a position he held for over two years. 

In 2008, he was first appointed as Regional Head of Islamic Banking – East and West Africa where he was tasked with  designing and executing the bank’s competitive entry into the Islamic Banking Segment.

Between Dec 2008 – Jan 2012, Mr Mohamed served as Consumer Banking Director in the same institution.

Education

Mr Mohamed holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Kenyatta University, a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Edith Cowan University in Australia and an Advanced Management Programme from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), Switzerland.

Mr Mohamed is also a licensed Executive Coach with the International Coaching Federation.
