Beauty, influence and power is what best describes Anne Mwangi Mvurya. She made history in students politics by becoming the first female student leader of the University of Nairobi. She became a household name by virtue of the office she held and her association with former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko. Mvurya became a fodder of tabloids before fading away as fast as she had risen.
Here is her story as told by WoK.
Who is Anne Mwangi Mvurya?
Anne Mwangi Mvurya headed the powerful University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA) which has been in existence for more than 50 years. She rose to the position after garnering 24 votes in the university elections held on 7th April 2019. Her closest competitor Samuel Ayoma got 8 votes. She took the reigns of leadership from Mr. Antony Manyara. The 27 year old is a third year law student at the University of Nairobi Chiromo campus. Born in a family of two in Nakuru, Mvurya has always been a leader all her life serving as a head girl in both primary and secondary school. Prior to winning the UNSA position, she led a female students’ welfare association.
Association with Mike Sonko
After winning the UNSA election in 2019, rumours had it that her campaigns were sponsored by former governor Mike Sonko. She however came out to dismiss the reports claiming that Sonko had nothing to do with her campaigns.
“Campaigns are a bit expensive because you have to campaign on all campuses. I used about Ksh 2 million. We did harambees at home and school and well-wishers, especially students, supported us,” Mvurya revealed.
Despite dismissing these allegations, individuals close to Mike Sonko maintained that the two were having a romantic affair and they have bumped into her many times at the governor’s private office in Upper Hill.
“It is obvious the two are an item. I have personally encountered them having a good time together a couple of times,” said a Member of County Assembly (MCA) when speaking to the standard media.
The Voi arrest saga.
On December 6th 2019 when governor Sonko was dramatically arrested in Voi, it was revealed that Anne Mvurya was with him in the car. According to the Nairobian, an officer who asked to remain anonymous also claimed that she appeared pregnant.
“I do not know her name but she was shy and appeared pregnant,” the officer revealed.
She later addressed the media stating that police should be humane when arresting people. When she was asked if she was with the governor, she declined to answer the question.
“You’re digressing from what we are talking about. I was not the one driving his car. I decline to answer these questions,” she said.
Ms Mvurya later accompanied Sonko to the Voi Police Station and was aboard the chopper that airlifted the former governor to Nairobi.
Pregnancy reports
The ex-student leader kept a low profile until recently when she granted Nation Newspaper an interview. She dismissed reports that she was pregnant telling the publication that she had taken time off to concentrate on her studies.
“No. I’m not expectant. I only took some time off so as to concentrate on my studies. I have now finished my degree in law and will be graduating in December this year,” She told Lifestyle.
“I’m currently in the US but I will be coming home in a few weeks’ time with two missions. First, to graduate and second, to dip my feet into national politics,” she added.
