Daniel Kipkogei Rono: Ex-High School Teacher Now Appointed KEMSA Chairman

By Prudence Minayo

Daniel Kipkogei Rono is the new board chairman of Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA). KEMSA has in the past been embroiled in a number of scandals, from supplies worth millions disappearing from their warehouse, overstating the value of medicine to fraud over procurement of Covid-19 supplies.

The former legislator will serve in this position for a term of three years. He brings on board a wealth of managerial and leadership skills having worked for tier one banks and a top real estate management company.

Prior to climbing up the career ladder, he started off as a high school teacher.

This is his story as told by WoK:

Education

He received both his Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) and Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) from St. Patrick’s High School Iten.

He went on to pursue a diploma at the Digital Advisory Learning Center (DALC) before attending the University of Sunderland for a Bachelor of Hospitality Management.

Later, he joined Riara University to undertake a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA).

Career

In 1985, he secured his first job as a teacher at Biwott High School. The following year, he joined Standard Chartered bank as a section head.

He would then go on to work for Dubai Bank as marketing manager before securing a job with Maestro Properties Limited in 2008 as a director.

The driven professional took a plunge into politics vying for the Keiyo South parliamentary seat in 2017 under the Jubilee party. He won the elections and represented the Elgeyo Marakwet constituency until 2022.

His appointment as the new chair of KEMSA is effective from Friday, 10th February 2022.

“I appoint Daniel Rono as the chairperson of KEMSA for a period of three years, with effect from February 10, 2023. The Appointment of Mary Chao Mwadime is revoked,” Ruto said in a Gazette notice dated Monday, February 6.
