Distinguished Career of Renowned Corporate Executive Peter Muthoka

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) chancellor Peter Muthoka boasts a long-decorated career, serving in some of the most coveted boards in the country.

He was appointed to the role by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta replacing the late Mwai Kibaki who had served as chancellor for 10 years.

Over the course of his career, Muthoka has served at various capacities, showcasing his managerial and business acumen. He is a former Chairman of the Board of Fellows of the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) and that of the Board of Trustees of The Management University of Africa (MUA).

Education

Muthoka attended Nyeri High School for his O-Levels before proceeding to Strathmore College for the A-Level. He holds BA (Hons) Degree from University of East Africa (UEA), and a MA Degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

He was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Management and Leadership (D.ML)(Honoris Causa) by the Management University of Africa (MUA).

According to the Institute of Directors Kenya (IOD Ke.) Peter Muthoka also holds Course Certificates from United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Bank of England, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Trade Organization (WTO)

He also holds certificates from the International Trade Centre (ITC), Japanese External Trade Organization (JETRO), Singapore Export Institute (SEI), Kenya Institute of Administration (KIA), Centre for Corporate Governance (CCG), Strathmore Business School (SBS) among others.

Career

Peter Muthoka served on the KCB board between 2004-2012, where he was the Chairman of KCB South Sudan, KCB Uganda and KCB Rwanda, Director KCB Tanzania, KCB Foundation, and Savings & Loan Ltd.

He is also a former chairman of the Old Mutual Investment Group (K) Ltd, UAP-Old Mutual Foundation, Bel-Air Management Ltd, Advocates Plaza Ltd, Woodley Springs Ltd and Faulu Microfinance Bank.

Muthoka also served as the Director of UAP-Old Mutual Holdings Ltd and Old Mutual Life Assurance Company (K) Ltd; and the Institute of Directors, Kenya.

He has served in various positions within the Kenyan Government, United Nations related bodies (UNESCO, UNDP, UNICEF, WTO, ITC), and the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

According to reports, Peter Muthoka is the founder and Chief Executive of the College of Banking and Finance of Kenya, founder and first Chief Executive of Export Promotion Council of Kenya and Kenya Commissioner-General at Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany.

Awards

Peter Muthoka was awarded the medal of Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS), by President Kibaki in 2004 for his service to the state from 1966 to 2004.

In 2012, he was awarded the medal of Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) for distinguished service rendered to the nation in areas of finance, investments, corporate social responsibility, and philanthropy.
