Felix Otieno Chimbly is an IT student at Kabarak University. In a recent interview with a leading media house, he revealed how he was able to turn Ksh600 Hustler loan into a company worth hundreds of thousands.

Here is his story as told by WoK.

Taking the loan

When president William Ruto launched Hustler fund on 30th November 2023, he checked his limit and found it was Ksh600.

He borrowed the money and used Ksh500 to hire a shaving machine from a friend who was using it for home purposes.

He used the remaining Ksh70 to purchase spirit. He turned an old kiosk in Rongo to his shop and opened for business.

As he had made a lot of friends, he received many clients within the first day and made Ksh2,000.

“They came in numbers to have a taste of my service. On that first day, I made Ksh2000. I was motivated that barbershop is a worthwhile business. On the second day, I hired it again for Ksh500, but I made only Ksh1500. I started hiring it daily. The little I got I saved some percentage,” he was quoted.

Once his savings had saved Ksh8,500, he bought his own machine and other stuff to help cut down on expenditure. Two weeks later, he purchased a hoofer for entertainment.

Opening a construction company

When he returned to school, he hired a barber and they agreed he would send Ksh500 daily.

He used 40% for survival in campus and saved the rest. By the time he was returning home, he had saved Ksh70,000.

He used the money to register a construction company called Morr Agency and Construction Company.

The IT student said the company employs about 20 people in Migori and has bagged lucrative tenders that enable them to make upto Ksh700,000 monthly.

After graduation, he hopes to expand his business as he has no desire for employment. He hopes to open branches of the company countrywide and create employment for hustling youths.

Felix Otieno said that aspiring entrepreneur should find their passion as most start-ups are founded by people who are passionate about what they do. He also added that capital should be the little you have.
