Hassan Mugambi: Growing Up In Kibra To Taking Over The Media Industry By Storm

Hassan Mugambi is a high-flying journalist currently serving as a crime reporter, and Swahili news anchor at Citizen TV.

Born and raised in Kibra, he is among journalists who fought for their spot in the industry, making him one of the most sought after Swahili journalists.

Mugambi is dating Mwanaidy Shishi, the proprietor of Mama Nilishe, a Swahili cuisine restaurant in Nairobi.

Here is his story as told by WoK.

Background

Hassan Mugambi was born on July 26, 1988 in Kibra, Nairobi County.

He was raised in the slum until he moved to Meru for his primary school education.

The news anchor attended Meru Boarding Primary School where he sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education.

He then progressed to East African School of Journalism and later the University of Nairobi (UoN) where he completed his degree.

Career Journey

After graduating from UoN, he kicked off his career at Pamoja FM, a radio station based in Kibra.

Mugambi landed himself a role at K24 TV when China Global Television Network (CGTN) owned by the Chinese state broadcaster China Central Television, was poaching journalists from some of the leading media companies in Kenya.

He applied for a job and he was lucky to land a role after which he was put on probation for three months.

At the Mediamax-owned TV station, Mugambi worked as a reporter, producer and news anchor.

In 2017, Citizen TV came calling and offered him a role as a crime reporter and Swahili news anchor making him one of the best in the country.

For instance, in 2019, Mugambi was awarded the Outstanding Media Security Investigative Journalist Award.

Scandals

Mugambi is a father of one girl.

On Monday, May 8, he was exposed for being a deadbeat dad by an anonymous source who chose to reach out to blogger Edgar Obare.

Mugambi was also accused of going out with his baby mama’s friend.

However, in a response to the blogger, the alleged baby mama dismissed the claims noting that it was fabricated.

“It’s not accurate. Whoever this is, they are not my friends. Everything you’ve been told is not accurate yet you posted without even giving me a right of reply,” she said in a message to the blogger.

However, Mugambi is dating Mwanaidy Shishi, an entrepreneur behind Mama Nilishe, a Swahili cuisine restaurant in Nairobi.

The journalist introduced Shishi on April 21, 2023 when muslims were marking Eid al-Fitr, an Islamic holiday that marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan.

In an update on his Instagram page, Mugambi shared a photo alongside Shishi who was dressed in a full Islamic attire.

“Eid Mubarak and Jumaa Kareem.”

Shishi later shared a compilation of videos with Mugambi on her Instagram reels and captioned it;

“Can I put my legs on your shoulder?”
