After complaints by passengers about uncomfortable seating in the Standard Gauge Railway(SGR) trains, Kenya Railways has announced the launch of a luxury travel coach on the Madaraka Express, aimed at improving the travel experience.

The railway authority announced the new changes on its social media platforms, sharing that the premium coach will have reclining seats, designed to provide a luxurious travel experience.

The reclining seats will be plush and spacious and will recline fully to act as beds for passengers travelling in the premium class.

Further, the seats are designed to offer legroom and space for passengers, with amenities such as individual power sockets and Wi-Fi access.

The luxury coach differs from other wagons, with only 28 seats to provide ample legroom as compared to the standard wagons with a seating capacity of 72 passengers per coach.

“Fully Reclining seats for your comfort and relaxation. KR Premium is set to redefine luxury travel with exclusive amenities and top-notch comfort,” Kenya Railways stated.

The premium coach will also offer additional storage space for passengers including storage space for shoes.

Passengers will also enjoy specialised catering services for the premium class services.

“Segregated from other compartments, the premium coach offers privacy and exclusivity ensuring passengers can work, relax or simply enjoy the beautiful scenery.

“Premium Class passengers will have access to VIP lounges and benefit from priority boarding and disembarkation at terminals, adding to the already existing convenience of their journey,” Kenya Railways stated.

Kenya Railways is expected to announce the date and prices for the premium services soon, with the prices expected to be higher than the ordinary tickets owing to the luxury amenities and personalised services offered during travel.

Currently, fares for the first class range from Kshs 3,000 to Kshs 3,800 while the second class fares range from Kshs 1,200 to Kshs 1,500 and Kshs 700 to Kshs 900 for economy class.
