List of Most Populated High Schools in Kenya

Most Kenyan parents want to take their children to big schools.

This is because not only are they reputable schools but most are academic giants that keep on producing the best students country-wide.

There are a lot of populated schools in Kenya, below are a few:

Kabianga High School

In 2023, the Nation ran a piece terming the school as the most sought-after with a population of over 3,000 students. The Chief principal said the school had received about 153,000 applicants and had admitted 930 form ones, the highest number recorded in the school.

This pushed the number of streams from 12 to 16. The school once again topped the list of most preferred schools when in December 2023, the Education CS said it had been chosen by over 180,000 candidates.

Maranda High School

For decades, Maranda High School has produced some of the best students with some of them dominating the political, business and education spheres.

Some of the most prolific and popular alumni include the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Raila Odinga, and many others.

However, what sets the school apart is its continued impressive performance in the national examination which prompts parents to seek admission for their learners in the school.

The school has an approximate population of 3,000 with over 600 students having sat for the 2023 national examinations.

St. Joseph’s Boys Kitale 

St. Joseph Boys is a renowned academic and sports giant in the Trans Nzoia region.

It also holds the moniker of one of the most populated high schools in the region with approximately 3,000 students.

The current form one streamsstream at 17 with the rest of the classes having over 10 streams.

Maseno School 

Maseno School was the sixth most sought-after school by the 2023 candidates with the total applicants number exceeding 120,000.

In 2023, the school was said to have over 2,900 students prompting them to set up 15 streams per class.

They even set up tripletriple-deckerand were forced to put up three more dormitories according to the Daily Nation.

Pangani Girls High School

For years, the school has received a huge number of applicants making it top ten among Kenya’s most preferred schools.

In the last few years, it has received over 100, 000 applicants with the Nation reporting in 2023 that they had exceeded their limit by double the amount. The school has a population of approximately 2,000.

Alliance High School

As one of Kenya’s oldest schools, Alliance has been one of the most sought-after schools in the country getting over 100,000 applicants in the past few years.

The schools have trained thousands of Kenyans who are dominating various fields from law, medicine, and business to politics.

The school has a population of over 1800 students.

Mang’u High School

Renowned as one of the best schools in the country, Mang’u attracts students from far and wide.

It is the only Kenyan school to own an aeroplane after Kenya Airways donated a Boeing 737-700 aircraft to the school in 2023.

By 2019, the school had a population of over 1700 with projections indicating this number has since increased.

Lenana School

With a reputation for greatness, Lenana School is attractive to both parents and students. The school is reported to boast a population of over 1700 students.

Kenya High School

Kenya High School is the oldest girls’ school in the country.

The culture of excellence and reputation of the school has endeared it to many Kenyans who wish to get an opportunity to study in the school. It boasts a population of more than 1700.

Kagumo High School

The institution has established itself as a premier education centre in the centre country.

It has nurtured the likes of Kenneth Marende, James Mwangi and Mutahi Kagwe. The school has a population of over 2,000.

Other notable mentions include: Litien Boys in Kericho, Nanyuki High School, Kisii High School, and Friends School Kamusinga.
