Lucy Njeri, a talented midfielder for Kayole Starlets and Harambee Starlets, has become a shining example of a footballer who has achieved success both on and off the field.
With a passion for entrepreneurship, Njeri ventured into the baking industry, demonstrating her determination and business acumen.
Njeri’s journey in football began with her involvement in teams like Kariobangi Sports, Old is Gold, Makolanders, and Soccer Sisters, before finding her place in the Kayole Starlets squad.
While excelling as a midfielder, Njeri recognized the importance of planning for life beyond football.
With the support of the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA), she applied for a scholarship and pursued a pastry coursework to establish her own baking business.
“I ventured into the business with the help of KEFWA, and I was able to complete my coursework, starting my ownshop. Work has been good since now I can pay for my bills,” Njeri notes.
Completing the coursework with KEFWA’s assistance, Njeri successfully established her bakery, where she finds fulfilment and financial stability.
Managing her football career and business concurrently requires strategic time management.
Njeri cleverly engages in business activities at the stadium and after matches, utilizing her fellow players as her customer base.
“Most of my customers are my fellow players, and I usually engage in business at the stadium and after matches, making it easier for me to balance football and business,” she added.
Recognizing the short-lived nature of football careers, Njeri’s entrepreneurial endeavors provide her with financial stability and security for the future.
By venturing into the baking industry and investing in her coaching career, Njeri ensures a sustainable and prosperous future beyond the field.
Moreover, Njeri’s dedication to personal growth is evident in her recent graduation with a FIFA/FKF CAF D coaching course license, enabling her to coach both senior and junior teams.
This diversification of her skills not only expands her opportunities but also contributes to the overall development of the football community.
Njeri attributes her success to the support she has received from organizations like KEFWA, which continuously strives to provide assistance to footballers.
“I really appreciate organizations like KEFWA for consistently being at the forefront of providing support to players. Their commitment to members’ well-being has allowed many of us footballers to thrive in our careers both on and off the pitch,” she expresses her gratitude.
Expressing her gratitude, Lucy Njeri encourages her fellow players to explore avenues such as coaching, starting businesses, investing in Saccos, or pursuing further education.
