Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp has issued a statement after failing to kick off its monetisation program as promised.
In March 2024, Meta announced that Kenyans will be able to monetize their content on Facebook beginning June 2024.
However, as of July 2024, the program was yet to start forcing content creators to demand for an explanation from Meta.
Michael BunDi, a Grammy nominated singer and producer wrote to Meta’s Head of Global Partnerships, Moon Baz Aouad, demanding an explanation on the same.
“…most of the people who were hopeful about Facebook monetisation in Kenya are losing hope that it may become a reality. Is there a possibility that the programme rollout was cancelled? Asking on behalf of the young creators in the 254,” BunDi wrote on Threads.
In her response, Moon Baz said the rollout had not been cancelled but was postponed due to the political unrest in Kenya brought about anti-government protests.
“We are still ready to launch! We are mindful that this is a sensitive moment in the country and out of respect we have paused the launch temporarily. We are hoping to launch very very soon! The rollout was not cancelled,” she replied.
Facebook offers several monetization tools to help creators earn money from their content.
The Facebook Business Suite is a hub that allows creators to manage their business profile, create ads, and access insights.
Ads Manager within Business Suite lets creators run ads to monetize their content.
Facebook Stars enables fans to purchase Stars to send to creators during live streams, with creators receiving a portion of the revenue from Stars.
Fan Subscriptions allow creators to offer paid subscriptions that provide exclusive content and benefits, with fans paying a monthly fee to access the subscription.
Facebook Shops enable creators to set up an in-platform storefront to sell products directly to fans, and they can also promote products through advertising.
Finally, In-Stream Ads allow creators to incorporate ads into their content, with Facebook sharing a portion of the revenue with the creator.
These tools provide creators with various ways to monetize their content and build sustainable businesses on Facebook’s platforms.
The specific earnings depend on factors like audience size, engagement and ad performance.
