Mombasa protests
Police have been engaged in running battles with protesters in Mombasa.

Protests in the coastal city of Mombasa have turned ugly after several people were reported shot.

Protests on Tuesday, July 2 spiralled into chaos as looters raided shops and hotels.

According to sources, several have been shot dead with cars stoned and some burnt.

Qaffe Point Hotel was raided by looters who left it damaged, and Quickmart Supermarket was also raided as looters had a field day.

In the morning, the demonstrations were peaceful as protesters started walking from Digo Road to Jomo Kenyatta Avenue.

By mid-day, however, some goons infiltrated the protests with some suspected thieves being beaten by the protesters before police rescued them.

Police have deployed more officers on the streets as violence raged on.

According to the Star, Businesses were at a standstill at Mwembe Tayari, the main stage of Mombasa County where there are booking stations.

“Nawala Center, one of the busy business buildings is also closed as employees watch over the door as the protests continue unravelling,”

“Police blocked protesters from going to Mombasa State House which is located along Mama Ngina Drive.” The Star reported.

Police used trucks and vans to block roads with some officers patrolling on foot.

Meanwhile, business owners in Nairobi are staring at huge losses and damages to their premises after vandals and looters struck.

In Nairobi CBD, especially Mfangano Street businesses have been looted in some cases losing everything inside their shop.

A businesswoman who spoke to WoK said she has lost more than KSh 3 million in goods and with the damages to her shop that amount will go higher.
