  • Newton Otieno scored 401 marks in the 2023 KCPE exams. His dream of joining Kisii High school may remain just that-a dream-if he doesn’t get a sponsor.

The best performing student in the Rangwe constituency has been unable to raise school fees to join high school.

Newton Otieno scored 401 marks in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

Sand Harvesting

To raise his fees, Newton has taken to sand harvesting. “Since schools were closed, I was helping my parents to collect sand but since we started no one has come to buy it,” he told Citizen TV.

He harvest the sand everyday for eight hours in a nearby river but stills makes very little.

His chances of joining high school continue to dim as his parents have no capacity to raise fees.

Newton is expected to join Kisii High when schools start admitting Form Ones.

His former headmaster Mr Peter Opere had this to say about Newton,

“He was a candidate in my school. Newton scored 401 marks, setting a record that has never been achieved in that school since time immemorial.

This is a commendable and excellent performance that we wish to advise and encourage many other pupils in our school years to come to work like Newton”, he shared.

Newton aspires to become a doctor but this will only remain a dream if he doesn’t get a sponsor.
