Okoth Obado is the incumbent Migori County Governor and is serving his second term.
Obado’s reign at the helm of Migori County was thrust into the national limelight following the brutal murder of University student Sharon Otieno and her unborn child. It was believed the child was fathered by the governor.
He again attracted national attention after the Ethic and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) unearthed a scheme in which the governor and his family used to siphon public funds from the county.
Obado and his children Achola Dan Okoth, Susan Scarlet Okoth Jerry Zachary Okoth and Adhiambo Evelyn Okoth are accused of swindling Ksh73.4 million from the county.
“The investigations were in respect of Sh73.4 million being sums indirectly received by the Governor through his children who received multiple payments from companies trading with Migori County Government between 2013/2014 Financial Year and 2016/2017,” a statement by the Director of Public Prosecution reads in part.
His wife, Hellen Obado was also summoned and interrogated following the death of Sharon.
Hellen Obado
Hellen is the wife of Migori Governor Okoth Obado, and together they are parents to Dan, Jerry, Susan, and Evelyn.
In 2019, The Standard reported that Obado had a fling with Rhoda Odie Nyakwaka, Hellen’s stepsister.
Hellen and Rhoda are born of the same father who bore the latter after inheriting her widowed mother in Kadika village of Suna Central sub-county.
She however, denied the allegations, defending and standing by her husband the governor.
Hellen has been probed and interrogated by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over the gruesome murder of Sharon. She has since denied any party to the claims.
Besides the allegations of murder, corruption and infidelity that have rocked the Migori County first family, Hellen is a strong and vocal human rights activist.
She has championed for the rights of the girl child in Migori County, strongly advocating for their education.
Achola is the firstborn son to Governor Obado and his wife Hellen.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Achola is a Mining Engineer by profession. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil and Construction Engineering from the university of Nairobi. He attended the institution between 2008 and 2013.
He also holds a Master of Engineering in Mine Geotechnical Engineering from the university of Curtin.
In 2016, Achola was accused by a lady by the name Susan Anyango of neglecting his paternal duties. She had alleged that he had failed to take care of his son and her, leaving them to languish in poverty.
The matter proceeded to court, but details of the determinations are still unknown.
He was charged alongside his father and siblings for swindling money from the County Government of Migori through irregular tendering.
Adhiambo Evelyn Okoth
Adhiambo studied at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.
She was also charged alongside her father and siblings in the Ksh73.4 million graft case. Some of the money was used to purchase a prime property in Loresho Ridge in Nairobi and registered in her name.
“The audit trail further disclosed that Sh34,525,000 was used to purchase a house in Loresho Ridge whose beneficial owner is Everlyne Adhiambo Zachary, the Governor’s daughter,” a statement from the DPP read in part.
Susan Scarlet Okoth
Susan is a lawyer. She attended the University of Nairobi from where she attained a Bachelor of Laws Degree.
She later joined the Kenya School of Law and graduated with a Diploma in Law.
She was known for living the flashy and lavish life. While still a student at University of Nairobi Parklands Law School, she often drove high-end cars to school.
Susan was also charged alongside her siblings and father in the Ksh73.4 million graft case.
Jerry Zachary Okoth
He is a son to Governor Obado and Hellen.
Jerry is the only child of the Migori governor that was not roped into the Ksh73.4 million Migori County graft scandal.
The DPP sated that his three siblings received Ksh38 million. The money is said to have used on paying their school fees in Australia and United Kingdom. It was also allegedly used to buy two Toyota Landcruiser V8s.
