Bonfire Adventures

From a starting capital of Ksh10,000, the couple managed to establish a business empire that has raked in millions and earned them respect in the entrepreneurial world. According to reports, Bonfire Adventures hit an annual turnover of Ksh700 million as of 2015 and hit a billion shillings at the end of 2017.

The Kabus’ life basically revolves around managing their tour company as they sojourn across the globe to ensure their clients get value for their money.

How the company started

Back in 2007, WhatsApp did not exist, predominantly people used Google groups. Sarah and Simon were members of the same Google group.

As members, they organized a meet-up and the duo was among the organizers of a trip to Lukenya, Athi River. The people were impressed with the outing and had them organize another trip and little by little, they began organizing several trips across the country at a fee.

In one instance, at the end of a trip, the client asked for the name of their company and an account for the payment. They had thought the client would just pay as usual via M-Pesa.

They came up with the name Bonfire Adventures at a bonfire in the Mara.

Sarah and Simon saw a gap in the country’s tourism travel industry. This is because most companies were focused on corporates.

Armed with Ksh10,000, they registered Bonfire Adventures. They operated from a Nairobi CBD office that belonged to Simon’s eldest brother. Sarah quit her job and went to work full time for their company. They would even work up to 6a.m at times just to kick the business off the ground.

Over time Bonfire has become the leading tour company in Kenya and has organized tours both within and outside the country.

The walls of the living room are decorated with a grid of family photos, art pieces and other sentimental objects.

The family chose an open kitchen that faces the dining room, to make it look spacious.

Troubled Marriage

On Sunday, Sarah put out several posts on her WhatsApp stories claiming that her children had been forcefully taken by Kabu.

She appeared to suggest that Simon colluded with the police to take the kids away from her.

“To all the police out there…never receive a bribe at the expense of a child losing their mother… very very heartbreaking… you will pay with the tears of that child in the hands of strangers. The law knows why children should be with the mother,” she posted.

According to Sarah, she has been in a toxic marriage under the disguise of “couple goals” and protecting the family business. However, she could not take it anymore, thus the conflict.

She has appealed to friends and concerned persons to help solve the matter and get her children back home.
