Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is facing impeachment proceedings initiated by lawmakers amid allegations of undermining President William Ruto and involvement in violent protests.

The motion was tabled on October 1, with Gachagua set to respond on October 8.

His camp has attempted to halt the process through court petitions, but these have been unsuccessful.

Public sentiment is divided; a recent poll indicates 41% support his impeachment, primarily due to perceived poor leadership and ethnic favoritism.

Should the impeachment be successful, Gachagua will forfeit several privileges currently afforded to State officers.

Article 230(4)(a) of the Constitution of Kenya grants the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) the authority to assess and determine the remuneration and benefits for State officers, which includes the Deputy President.

Under the existing salary structure for the Deputy President, Gachagua receives a gross monthly salary of Ksh 1,227,188.

This amount comprises a basic salary of Ksh 736,313, along with various allowances, such as a house allowance of Ksh 300,000, an official commuter allowance, and a salary market adjustment totaling Ksh 190,875.

Additionally, the Deputy President is entitled to an official vehicle in accordance with the current government transport policy.

Other benefits include an annual medical insurance plan that extends coverage to his spouse and up to four dependent children under the age of twenty-five.

Gachagua is provided with inpatient medical coverage amounting to Ksh 10 million, outpatient coverage of Ksh 300,000, and maternity coverage of Ksh 150,000.

Furthermore, he has access to dental and optical coverage, each valued at Ksh 75,000.

In addition to these health benefits, Deputy President Gachagua is eligible for various other advantages, including group life insurance that is equivalent to three times his annual pensionable emoluments.

He also qualifies for personal accident coverage, which mirrors the same threefold annual pensionable emoluments, a daily subsistence allowance for both local and international travel, and a monthly airtime allocation of Ksh 20,000.

Additional perks include an official residence equipped with necessary amenities and staff, security services, and an annual leave allowance of Ksh 50,000.

Moreover, the Deputy President is entitled to a retirement benefits package for life, as specified in the Retirement Benefits for Deputy President and Designated State Officers Act.

Upon retirement, a Deputy President receives a monthly pension that constitutes eighty percent of their last salary while in office, which amounts to Ksh 589,050.

Retired Deputy Presidents are also granted two saloon vehicles, one four-wheel drive vehicle, a fuel allowance equivalent to fifteen percent of their current monthly salary, and comprehensive medical and hospital insurance, among other benefits.
