Samson Maombi, a Kenyan gospel musician from Minyere in Ntimaru, Migori County, has taken the music scene by storm with his viral hit Nitauimba Wimbo Mpya.
Combining traditional country music with Kiswahili gospel themes, Maombi has created a unique genre that resonates deeply with both local and international audiences.
His denim suit, baritone voice, and heartfelt lyrics have become his signature, drawing comparisons to legends like Guy Penrod and Pharry K.
The song, which garnered over 600,000 views on YouTube within three weeks, has been widely praised for its uplifting message.
Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, have played a pivotal role in amplifying Maombi’s music, with users creating content inspired by his hit song.
Humble beginnings and early inspiration
Maombi’s journey into music began in his childhood within church environments, where he honed his vocal skills in choirs.
Growing up in Kisii, he discovered country music through a friend who sold records in town.
Spending hours listening to these songs, he developed a love for the genre, which later inspired his own musical style.
Despite his passion for music, Maombi faced significant challenges early in his career.
After his father’s death in 2011, financial hardships threatened his education, but his resilience and faith saw him through.
During this time, he began experimenting with blending gospel themes into country music, performing hymns in the style for fun.
A breakthrough moment
Maombi’s breakthrough came with Nitauimba Wimbo Mpya, a song born out of prayer and his spiritual journey.
“I asked God for a new song,” he explains. “I promised Jesus that there will be a better life in Him for those who believe and trust in His name.”
Encouraged by his wife, Linnet Matinde, who helped him translate his lyrics into Swahili, Maombi created a track that reflects his faith and personal struggles.
The song’s success brought newfound recognition.
He began performing at local events, concerts, and church gatherings, captivating audiences with his engaging stage presence and emotional delivery.
One of the defining moments in his career was an electrifying performance at President William Ruto’s New Year’s Eve dinner at Kisii State Lodge, where he solidified his status as a rising star.
Overcoming challenges and staying grounded
Like many aspiring artists, Maombi initially struggled to find platforms for his talent.
“I would attend functions and still not find time to perform, even though I was invited,” he recalls.
Transport costs and unpaid gigs were common obstacles, but his determination never wavered.
Even with his growing fame, Maombi remains humble, attributing his success to God’s grace and the unwavering support of his wife.
“She really pushed me when I almost gave up,” he says.
His music reflects his belief in using his platform to spread hope and faith, a mission that continues to guide his career.
Maombi and his wife share three children, namely Boke, Kiora and Robi.
